Hirizo Beach is an exceptionally beautiful coastline located near the settlement of Nakagi in Minamiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. Often referred to as the "Last Hidden Gem of Izu," it is characterized by a unique topography surrounded by steep cliffs. The most distinctive feature is that there is no land access; the beach can only be reached by boat. This isolated environment has preserved an incredibly pristine and rich natural ecosystem. The water clarity is so high that you can clearly see the seabed even at depths of 5 meters or more, offering a mesmerizing view that shifts from emerald green to a deep, sapphire blue, reminiscent of a tropical overseas resort.
Historically, this area was known as "Hiiridohama," a name believed to originate from the beautiful sight of the sun setting through a natural rock arch. While the name "Hirizo Beach" is now widely established, its historical roots reflect a long-standing appreciation for the area's natural architectural beauty. The Nakagi district has a long history of thriving fishing, with traditional methods used for harvesting spiny lobsters, abalone, and turban shells. Today, the local community continues to protect this precious natural environment.
The greatest allure of Hirizo Beach is the world-class snorkeling and diving. The seabed is home to a diverse array of marine life, providing a spectacle of color and movement. Visitors can also enjoy the breathtaking views from Aiai Cape, looking out over the surrounding cliffs and scattered islands. Because of the extreme water clarity, observing tropical fish and seasonal marine creatures feels like being inside a giant, natural aquarium. The visual depth and clarity of the water provide an immersive underwater experience unlike anywhere else in Japan.
The ideal time to visit Hirizo Beach is during the summer months (approximately July to September). During this period, the beach is officially open, and boat services operate from Nakagi Port to transport visitors to the shore. Outside of the summer season, access is strictly limited as there are no land routes. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the middle of the day when the sunlight penetrates the water most effectively, highlighting the stunning colors and transparency of the sea.
Activities at Hirizo Beach primarily revolve around snorkeling and scuba diving. To reach this paradise, you must take a boat from Nakagi Port. The underwater landscape is rich with diverse topography, including rock formations and reefs that make exploration exciting. Additionally, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the region through sightseeing cruises, such as the "Irozaki Cape Cruise," which offers a different perspective of the dramatic coastline.
Near Hirizo Beach, you can visit Aiai Cape for panoramic views or relax at Yusuge Park. The base for boat departures is Nakagi Port, a charming fishing village where you can experience a quiet, traditional maritime atmosphere. The area also provides access to the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, including Irozaki, allowing you to enjoy the dynamic and grand-scale natural landscapes characteristic of this region.
Since access requires a boat, it is crucial to check the boat operation status in advance. Please prepare swimwear, sandals, and clothing that can easily get wet. If you plan to snorkel, ensure you have your own mask, fins, and snorkel gear. As most local services primarily accept cash, we highly recommend bringing sufficient Japanese Yen. As this is a pristine natural environment, please be mindful of the surroundings, take all your trash back with you, and respect the local ecosystem.
