Lake Haruna is a beautiful caldera lake formed by the eruption of Mt. Haruna. The landscape is characterized by the majestic view of Mt. Haruna (Haruna-fuji) to the east, surrounded by rolling mountains. During the Taisho era, many intellectuals and artists, including the famous painter Takehisa Yumeji, visited this area, making it a frequent subject for literature and art. Throughout the seasons, the lake is adorned with cherry blossoms, azaleas, and summer flowers, as well as vibrant autumn foliage. The area offers a harmonious blend of nature and culture, with various hot spring facilities, restaurants, and leisure spots dotted along the shore.
The area has a long history of spiritual significance, such as the "Haruna-ko" rituals. Historically, people would visit Haruna Shrine south of the lake to collect sacred spring water to pray for rain for their crops. Since the Meiji era, as Ikaho Onsen developed, the area became a gathering place for intellectuals. Famous figures like the poet Akiko Yosano and the haiku master Kyoshi Takahama expressed the beauty of Lake Haruna through their art, giving the location a profound cultural and artistic value beyond its natural beauty.
The greatest draw of Lake Haruna is the breathtaking view of Mt. Haruna rising above the lake. Visitors can also immerse themselves in the world of the artists who loved this place at the "Takehisa Yumeji Atelier." Other highlights include the fresh spring water flowing from the surrounding mountains and the seasonal blooms. Additionally, the Funaotaki Falls, where water cascades down a 60-meter cliff, offers a spectacular sight of natural geological beauty.
Activities are most concentrated from April to November. Spring (April–May) brings cherry blossoms and azaleas, while early summer features lush greenery and summer flowers. Summer is perfect for water activities and boating, while Autumn (October–November) offers stunning foliage reflected on the lake surface. In winter (December–March), while some leisure facilities close, you can enjoy the serene snowy landscapes. For the best experience, enjoy boating during the bright daylight hours and witness the sunset against the silhouette of Mt. Haruna.
A variety of leisure activities are available on the lake. You can enjoy a unique experience with themed boats, such as duck, ladybug, or coffee cup shapes. A truly local experience is riding the "Tote Horse Carriage" around the lakeshore. The surrounding area also features hot spring facilities, campsites, and ski resorts, making it an ideal destination for extended stays. Whether it is a quiet nature walk or seasonal water sports, there is something for everyone.
The area around Lake Haruna is well-equipped with many tourist facilities and accommodations. For those wishing to enjoy hot springs, there are facilities right by the lake or nearby in the famous Ikaho Onsen area. The surrounding mountains also serve as a base for outdoor enthusiasts with various campsites and ski resorts. Local restaurants serve regional delicacies, such as Wakasagi (smelt) and dishes made with seasonal mountain vegetables.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for strolling around the lake, boating, and visiting the waterfall, as the path to Funaotaki Falls involves some climbing. Regarding payments, please note that some facilities may only accept cash, though others may accept credit cards or IC cards. It is wise to carry some cash with you.
