Genbikei Gorge is a stunning natural landscape located along the midstream of the Ichinoseki River in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. Due to the erosion caused by the river flowing from Mount Kurikoma, the area features a breathtaking 2km stretch of unique rock formations, deep ravines, and waterfalls. As a renowned scenic spot, visitors can enjoy walking along the riverside paths, observing the dynamic movement of water between jagged rocks and steep cliffs.
Genbikei was designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument on September 5, 1927. It has long been cherished as a beautiful destination with deep historical roots. Notably, the 'Choja Taki Bridge' spanning the gorge has a history of using bamboo for its framework during its construction in 1939, and it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 1999, adding a layer of cultural depth to the natural scenery.
The greatest charm of Genbikei lies in its dynamic geological formations. A particularly fascinating feature is the 'potholes' (ouana)—circular depressions in the bedrock carved by the swirling movement of pebbles in the water—which serve as important geological specimens. The area is well-equipped with walking paths and rest areas, allowing visitors to experience the different moods of the river, from the calm downstream to the more rugged upstream sections.
Genbikei offers a different face in every season. In spring, the surrounding greenery begins to bud, adding vibrant colors to the riverside landscape. There are two main walking routes: a gentle 30-minute loop around the downstream area and a more vigorous 70-minute trek toward the upstream area where the nature feels more wild. Since the light hitting the rock faces and the color of the water change depending on the sun's position, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
The quintessential Genbikei experience is the famous 'Kikko Dan-go' (Flying Dumplings). This unique system involves placing money in a small box and striking a wooden mallet to make a sound; this signals the shop on the opposite side of the river to send a basket via a cable system. Watching the basket carrying delicious dumplings and tea swing across the river is a delightful sight that is perfect for photos and videos, making it a favorite among tourists.
Several other tourist spots are located near Genbikei within Ichinoseki City. For instance, Geibikei Gorge, another famous scenic gorge, is a popular choice to visit in the same trip. Additionally, there are roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) nearby, making it easy to stop by for local products and refreshments during your travels.
