Fujita Memorial Garden is a historic Japanese garden created in 1919 by master gardeners invited from Tokyo. Developed by Kenichi Fujita of Hirosaki City, the garden covers an expansive area of approximately 21,800 square meters, making it one of the largest in the Tohoku region. The garden is divided into two distinct areas by a 13-meter high cliff: an upper plateau and a lower lowland area. From the upper level, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Mt. Iwaki, while the lower area features a serene landscape with a pond, a waterfall, and a striking red bridge, perfect for enjoying waterfront scenery.
The history of this garden dates back to the early 20th century in 1919. Originally the property of Kenichi Fujita, it was later owned by Michinoku Bank before being developed and opened to the public by Hirosaki City in July 1991. The garden is dotted with buildings of diverse cultural backgrounds, including Japanese-style houses, Western-style buildings, and the Takumi-kan (Archaeological Museum), all of which play a vital role in conveying the local history and culture. The design follows the Japanese philosophy of respecting natural topography, utilizing the pond and terrain to create a harmonious landscape.
The most striking feature of the garden is its use of elevation changes to create diverse landscapes. From the upper area, you can gaze upon the majestic Mt. Iwaki, while in the lower area, you can stroll around the pond to enjoy the waterfall, the red bridge, and the reflections on the water's surface. Additionally, the site contains Japanese-style, Western-style, and archaeological buildings that visitors can explore. Notably, the first floor of the Western-style building is open to the public for free, allowing you to admire the exquisite architectural details.
Fujita Memorial Garden offers different charms depending on the season. A popular time to visit is during the cherry blossom season (late April to early May) as it is located near the famous Hirosaki Park. Another beautiful time is around November during the Chrysanthemum and Autumn Colors Festival, when the scenery is filled with vibrant colors. During the summer, occasional night openings may be held. The standard operating hours are from 9:00 to 17:00, but please check in advance as these may change depending on the season or special events.
The garden offers opportunities to touch upon traditional Japanese culture. A representative activity is the "Matcha Tea Experience" at the Japanese-style building. This program allows you to learn about the history of the tea ceremony while actually whisking your own matcha. After the experience, you can spend a relaxing moment enjoying the view from the veranda with seasonal Japanese sweets. Depending on the season, other hands-on activities like making herbariums or wood crafts may also be available.
Fujita Memorial Garden is located near Hirosaki Park, an area that retains the atmosphere of a historic castle town. When visiting, we recommend combining your trip with a visit to Hirosaki Castle or the surrounding cherry blossom festivities to deeply experience the culture of Hirosaki.
