Ena Kyō is a breathtaking scenic area located along the middle reaches of the Kiso River, situated between Ena City and Nakatsugawa City in Gifu Prefecture. The area was named by the geographer Shiga Shigeyoshi during the Taisho era. Today, the landscape is defined by a man-made lake formed by the Oi Dam, creating a unique fusion of natural geological beauty and artificial engineering. The shores are lined with diverse and striking rock formations sculpted by centuries of erosion.
The current landscape was shaped by the construction of the Oi Dam. While once a natural deep valley, the completion of the dam transformed the area into a serene reservoir, which later developed into a popular tourist destination. The area also holds significant cultural value, having inspired famous poets and writers. For instance, the renowned poet Kitahara Hakushu visited this area, and his legacy is honored with a monument at Sazanami Park, commemorating his work "Ena Kyo Tonton Bushi."
The most striking feature of Ena Kyō is the collection of bizarre and magnificent rock formations along the banks. Notable shapes include the Byobu-iwa (Folding Screen Rock), Gunkan-iwa (Warship Rock), Shishi-iwa (Lion Rock), and Kagami-iwa (Mirror Rock). A key highlight is the "Kasa-iwa" (Umbrella Rock), a designated natural monument. This unique, umbrella-shaped rock is formed from biotite granite and has been shaped by rainwater and weathering. Visitors can enjoy these spectacular views from the water via regular sightseeing boat cruises.
Ena Kyō offers a different visage in every season. In spring, approximately 200 cherry blossom trees bloom beautifully around the Sazanami Plaza. From summer to autumn, the lush green valley provides a refreshing atmosphere, peaking in autumn when the vibrant colors of the changing leaves paint the steep cliffs in brilliant hues. Even in winter, the quiet, serene landscape offers a unique charm. For the best experience, visiting during daylight hours is recommended to clearly see the intricate details of the rock formations from the boat.
