Daiitokuji is a Tendai sect temple nestled within the natural beauty of Mount Ushidaki in Osawa, Kishiwada City, Osaka. The central deity, Daiitoku Myoo, is famously depicted riding a water buffalo, a figure that embodies the long history of this site as a place of ascetic training. The temple grounds offer a unique landscape where architecture and nature harmonize, featuring several cascading waterfalls and the beautiful Tahoto pagoda, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The history of this temple is deeply rooted in Shugendo (mountain asceticism). It is said that En no Gyoja, the founder of Shugendo, established the temple on Mount Ushidaki. For centuries, it has been revered as a sacred site for spiritual training. The name of the temple is tied to a legend involving a monk named Keiryo from Mt. Hiei, who, while practicing at the 'San-no-taki' waterfall, witnessed the deity Daiitoku Myōō riding a water buffalo emerging from the falls. This legend is why the central deity is typically depicted riding a water buffalo. Furthermore, it is said that the great Buddhist master Kukai once practiced here, adding to the site's profound historical significance. While it once practiced both Shingon and Tendai traditions, it currently operates as a Tendai sect temple.

The most recommended time to visit is late November during the autumn foliage season. During this time, the 'Ushidaki Mountain Momiji Festival' is held, allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacular view of colorful leaves, waterfalls, and historic architecture together. While daytime is ideal for observing the details of the pagoda and waterfalls, please dress warmly as temperatures can drop significantly in the mountains.
Here, you can experience the traditional culture of Shugendo and find spiritual peace amidst nature. Listening to the sound of the waterfalls while observing the ancient architecture provides a precious moment of detachment from daily life.
