Clematis no Oka is a sophisticated cultural complex nestled on the scenic slopes of Mt. Ashitaka in Nagaizumi, Shizuoka Prefecture. This unique space serves as a sanctuary for both visual and literary arts, featuring the Bernard Buffet Museum, which showcases the works of the renowned French painter, and the Yasushi Inoue Literature Museum, dedicated to the celebrated Japanese novelist. The foundation of this site dates back to November 1973, with the opening of the Bernard Buffet Museum and the Yasushi Inoue Literature Museum. The Bernard Buffet Museum houses a significant collection of works by the French artist, curated by Kiichiro Okano, with additional wings for printmaking added in 1988 and 1996. The connection to Yasushi Inoue is also deeply rooted in the history of the site through his relationship with Kiichiro Okano. For decades, this facility has served as a vital hub for regional cultural promotion and artistic appreciation.

The experience at Clematis no Oka shifts beautifully with the seasons. While the museums offer a calm, indoor environment perfect for focused art appreciation, the surrounding landscape changes throughout the year. Please note that the former 'Clematis Garden' area closed at the end of September 2023, so current visits primarily focus on the museums, literature center, and the various cafes.

Located on the slopes of Mt. Ashitaka, the complex is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, including the nearby Surugahei Natural Park. It is easily accessible from major areas like Mishima and Susono, making it an excellent stop during a wider Shizuoka sightseeing tour.
