Chikyū no Maruku Mieru Oka Tenbōkan is an observation facility located at the summit of Mt. Atago, the highest point in the Hokoso district of Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture. As its name suggests, the rooftop observatory provides a view where the horizon forms a gentle arc, allowing visitors to visually experience the curvature of the Earth. On clear days, the 360-degree panoramic view reveals the silhouettes of distant mountains like Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tsukuba, alongside the many wind turbines of Byobugaura, often referred to as the 'White Cliffs of Dover in the East.' It is a place where the vastness of the Pacific Ocean meets the sculptural beauty of nature.
This hill has long watched over the history of Sotogawa, a town that once flourished as a fishing community. Generations of fishermen stood upon this hill, gazing at the sea below—praying for bountiful catches on calm days and praying for the safe return of their families during storms. The history of a community that has lived in harmony with the harsh yet bountiful sea is etched into this landscape. Today, it serves as a local symbol and a popular destination for travelers seeking beautiful scenery.
The primary attraction is the view from the rooftop observatory. Seeing the horizon as a curved line rather than a straight one is a profound experience that symbolizes the 'roundness of the Earth.' Additionally, the sight of the wind turbines lined up along Byobugaura creates a unique and striking landscape against the vast Pacific Ocean. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons and time of day, offering a different sense of awe with every visit. On the first floor, you can find a souvenir corner featuring local specialties, while the second-floor event hall often hosts seasonal exhibitions such as photography or painting displays.
The best time to visit depends on what you wish to see. For a truly emotional experience, visit during sunset when the sky and sea are bathed in golden hues. On January 1st, the facility holds special early morning hours for the first sunrise of the year, opening at 5:30 AM. Please note that since this is an extremely cold time of year, preparation is essential. From spring to summer, the weather is generally clearer, increasing the visibility of distant landmarks like Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tsukuba, making it an ideal time for photography.
Beyond just viewing the scenery, you can immerse yourself in local culture. The event hall on the second floor offers opportunities to learn more about the region through art and photography exhibitions. On the first floor, the shop provides a great chance to pick up unique Choshi local products. Spending a quiet moment overlooking the ocean landscape is a special way to disconnect from daily life and find tranquility.
The surrounding area is dotted with spots that showcase the rich nature and history of Choshi. For example, the Inubosaki Lighthouse is another excellent spot for enjoying horizon views. You can also use a common passport/pass with the Choshi Port Tower to visit nearby facilities efficiently. The area is perfect for a scenic drive, combining the lively atmosphere of the fishing ports with beautiful coastal landscapes.
The rooftop observatory can be very windy, so please wear clothing appropriate for the season. Especially during early morning visits or the New Year's sunrise, the cold can be intense; please bring heavy winter gear. Regarding payments, for entries before 7:00 AM, only cash or PayPay are accepted. Credit cards and other electronic money usage may be restricted depending on the time or situation, so we recommend checking in advance. Please maintain a quiet atmosphere to ensure all visitors can enjoy the scenery peacefully.
