Chamekuji Temple is a historic temple located in Ama City, Aichi Prefecture. The temple grounds are dotted with structures designated as Important Cultural Properties, including a majestic three-story pagoda, the Nandaimon (South Gate), and Nio statues that hold immense historical value. Beyond being a place for quiet prayer, Chamekuji is a vibrant cultural hub where visitors can experience the pulse of local life through events like the "Tezukuri Morning Market" and various seasonal festivals.
The history of this site dates back to 1283, when the monk Ippen visited the area while traveling from Kamakura, establishing traditions such as the Nembutsu Odori (Buddhist dance) that continue to this day. The temple is also famously known as the place where the Sengoku-period warlord Fukushima Masanori studied his calligraphy during his childhood; the Nio statues housed within the grounds are said to have been donated by him. These architectural treasures and cultural assets have been carefully preserved through many centuries.
The most striking feature of Chamekuji is its historical architecture. The three-story pagoda, standing over 25 meters tall, and the Nandaimon gate housing the Nio statues are vital examples of traditional Japanese architectural-engineering. Additionally, the temple holds precious artifacts such as Buddhist paintings from the Heian period and a bronze bell from the Nanboku-cho period. Different seasonal events bring unique energy to the temple. You can experience the essence of Japanese seasonal transitions through the "New Year's First Prayer" (Jan 1st–3rd), the "Setsubun Festival" (Feb 3rd), and the "Momo Toka Festival" in August. Furthermore, the "Tezukuri Morning Market" is held on the 12th of every month, offering a lively scene filled with many locals. We recommend visiting in the refreshing early morning hours to worship, followed by enjoying the bustling atmosphere of the market.
At Chamekuji, you can experience more than just sightseeing; you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese market. During the monthly morning market (12th) or the "Fudo Marche" (21st), you can find various local specialties and crafts, allowing you to feel the local community's vitality firsthand. It is also a wonderful opportunity to engage in cultural customs, such as visiting different halls to receive blessings.
Near the temple, you can visit the "Chamekuji History and Folklore Museum" to learn more about the region's past through excavated artifacts and displays of local life. The surrounding area also features cozy cafes and fruit shops, making it easy to take a break during your visit. Exploring the local streets and the surrounding neighborhood adds even more depth to your cultural journey.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the temple grounds contain gravel paths and stone pavements. Please prepare cash (coins and small bills) for purchasing amulets (omamori) or for prayer offerings (kitou), as these transactions typically require cash. Regarding photography, there may be restrictions on filming certain cultural properties; please follow the local signs and instructions.
