Cherry Road (also known as the Sakura Road with Ocean View) is a breathtaking 5km-long avenue of cherry trees located along the coast of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. With approximately 700 Somei Yoshino cherry trees planted against the stunning backdrop of the Sea of Japan, the area transforms into a magnificent pink tunnel during the spring season. The striking contrast between the soft pink blossoms and the deep blue of the ocean makes it a premier destination for scenic drives and leisurely strolls.
The area has long been celebrated as a premier cherry blossom destination. Its beauty was officially recognized in 1994 when it was selected as one of the "New Top 100 Streetscapes in Japan." This recognition highlights the region's commitment to maintaining a beautiful, natural landscape that harmonizes perfectly with the local coastal environment.
The most spectacular view is the coastal route where the horizon of the Sea of Japan meets the endless rows of cherry trees. The 5km stretch is dominated by Somei Yoshino blossoms, which, at full bloom, create a vivid and colorful landscape that blends seamlessly with the sky and sea. The changing expressions of the ocean throughout the day, paired with the seasonal colors of the blossoms, offer a unique and unforgettable visual experience.
The peak season is from late March to early April, coinciding with the full bloom of the cherry blossoms. During the bright daylight hours, the contrast between the blue sea and the pink cherry blossoms is most striking. While the road is open for traffic at all times, please note that access may be restricted during extreme weather conditions. It is highly recommended to check local weather and road status before your visit.
Since Cherry Road is a developed roadway, it is an ideal route for a scenic drive where you can enjoy the view while moving through the landscape. Visitors can also stop at various pocket parks or parking areas along the way to enjoy stationary sightseeing. Whether you are driving or walking, the open coastal environment provides a refreshing way to experience the changing seasons.
The area around Cherry Road is dotted with various tourist attractions in Matsue City. You can easily access areas famous for traditional Japanese confectionery (Wagashi) culture, coastal landscapes, and historical sites. Depending on the season, you can easily combine a visit to Cherry Road with other natural landmarks or cultural facilities within Shimane Prefecture.
Cherry Road is a public road, so there are no admission fees or reservation requirements. As it is located along the coast, we recommend wearing clothing suitable for changing weather and wind. Parking is available at Sakura Park (approx. 50–60 spaces) and nearby pocket parks (a few spaces each), but please be mindful of crowds. While the road itself is free, cash may be needed if you use nearby local facilities. English-language signage and staff support are limited, so please prepare in advance. For accessibility, Sakura Park and other designated areas feature wheelchair-accessible toilets. Please prioritize safety and avoid obstructing traffic while taking photos.
