Event Overview

Katsuura Taichō Matsuri is a historic autumn festival held annually in Katsuura City, Chiba Prefecture, with roots dating back to the late Edo period. Originally held separately by different districts, the festival was unified in 1979 into the current "Katsuura Autumn Joint Festival." Rooted in the traditions of a fishing town, this festival prays for bountiful catches and safe voyages, sustained by the strong bonds and passion of the local community.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The greatest highlight of this festival is the majestic movement of the portable shrines (mikoshi). You will witness the intense "momi" (shaking) and "sashi" (lifting) of the shrines accompanied by vigorous shouts of "Hora, Dairyo!" The parade of elaborately carved floats also overwhelms spectators with its beauty.

Specifically, the climax of the festival, the "Mikoshi no Funawatashi," is a sacred and moving sight. The sight of the portable shrine being transferred to a fishing boat at Katsuura Fishing Port to travel across the sea is a unique traditional landscape of this region. Additionally, the Katsuura Central Shopping Street comes alive with numerous food stalls offering fresh local seafood.

Schedule

The festival is held for 4 days, ending on Respect for the Aged Day (the 3rd Monday of September). For 2026, the schedule is as follows:

• *Day 1 (September 12)**: Portable shrine processions (mura-mawari) begin in various districts, signaling the start of the festival.
• *Day 2 (September 13)**: The Katsuura Autumn Joint Festival takes place. Highlights include the powerful gathering of multiple shrines and traditional rituals like "Tainai-kuguri.";
• *Day 3 (September 14)**: The central shopping street becomes lively with the parade of floats, music, and food stalls.
• *Day 4 (September 15)**: The grand finale, "Mikoshi no Funawatashi," where the shrine is carried onto a fishing boat to cross the sea.

The main venues are Katsuura Fishing Port, Tomi Misaki Shrine, and the Katsuura Central Shopping Street. The event spans a wide area of Katsuura City.
