Kaminoiko Pond is an incredibly beautiful and transparent pond located within a forest in Kiyosato Town, Hokkaido. Although it is a small pond—approximately 220 meters in circumference and about 5 meters deep—its water quality is exceptionally clear, boasting a level of transparency that allows you to see straight to the bottom. The water color shifts from a vibrant turquoise near the surface to a deep emerald green toward the bottom, creating a truly mystical impression. Large fallen trees lie at the bottom, creating a complex and beautiful landscape of light and shadow.
The pond is called "Kaminoiko" (Pond of the Gods) due to the legend that it is fed by the sublacustrine springs of Lake Mashu. Lake Mashu is a rare type of lake with no visible rivers flowing in or out, and the surrounding area is rich in such spring water. The water temperature remains low at approximately 8°C throughout the year. This low temperature slows the decomposition of organic matter, allowing the sunken logs to remain preserved in their original form for a long time. In 2017, the area was incorporated into the Akan-Mashu National Park.
The greatest charm is undoubtedly the color and clarity. When sunlight penetrates the water surface, the white volcanic ash at the bottom reflects the light, creating a brilliant blue glow. The sunken trees evoke a sense of stillness, as if time has stopped. Additionally, near the pond is "Sakura Falls," where from June to August, you may witness the dynamic sight of cherry salmon jumping to leap over the falls.
Kaminoiko Pond shows different faces depending on the season. The transparency is most striking during the daytime when the sunlight is strongest. To capture the fine details of the underwater scenery, a bright, sunny day is ideal. The surrounding lush greenery is also beautiful during the seasons of fresh greenery and summer. However, during winter, the area is affected by heavy snow, so it is crucial to check the latest road conditions before visiting.
Simply observing the landscape in the silence of nature is a precious experience. Depending on the season, guided tours such as the "Kaminoiko Snowshoe Tour" may be available, offering a chance to experience winter nature from a different perspective. You can also observe the rich ecosystem, including fish like the Oshorokoma swimming in the water.
Kaminoiko Pond is located in the Lake Mashu and Akan-Mashu National Park area. The surrounding area features viewpoints for Lake Mashu and beautiful driving routes leading toward the Shiretoko Peninsula. Exploring the streets of Kiyosato Town and the natural forest roads will deepen your understanding of eastern Hokkaido's nature.
As the pond is located within a forest, please wear comfortable walking shoes. The parking area consists of unpaved roads, so please drive with caution. Even in summer, the temperature near the water can feel low, so we recommend bringing clothing that is easy to layer. To protect the environment, please take all trash home with you and strictly follow any restrictions regarding entering the water or the pond area.
