Okoshiki Coast (Okoshiki Kaigan) is a stunning coastline located in Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, facing the Ariake Sea. The greatest charm of this location lies in the dynamic natural beauty created by one of Japan's largest tidal-range differences. When the tide recedes, a vast tidal flat is revealed, showcasing beautiful sand ripples (sand patterns) sculpted by wind and waves—a true masterpiece of nature.

The coast is steeped in ancient legend. Its name is said to derive from the story of Emperor Keiko, who, during his expedition to Kyushu, was so mesmerized by the breathtaking scenery that he momentarily halted his palanquin (mikoshi) to gaze at the view. This historical connection has preserved the site not just as a natural landmark, but as a special place that has moved human hearts for centuries.
The highlight of Okoshiki Coast is the combination of the 'sand ripples at low tide' and the 'sunset.' As the tide goes out, complex and beautiful curves appear on the vast tidal flat.
