Koma Usa Hachiman Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture. The most significant feature of this site is the dedication of the 'Hyakoku Odori' (Hundred Grain Dance), which is designated as an intangible cultural property of Hyogo Prefecture. This ritual, which serves as a prayer to nature and a preservation of local tradition, has been carefully protected for generations. The shrine is surrounded by lush greenery, offering a serene atmosphere where traditional Japanese architectural styles stand in harmony with nature.
The history of this shrine traces back to the worship of Emperor Ojin. The current main hall was reconstructed during the Meiwa era (1764–1771) following a severe drought, thanks to the support of Kuki Takayuki, the 8th lord of the Sanda domain, and local contributors. The Hyakoku Odori itself is a rain-making ritual with over 500 years of history, having been performed since the year 1503 (Bunki 3). This long-standing history has established the shrine as a vital spiritual hub for the local community.
The primary attraction of Koma Usa Hachiman Shrine is the traditional rituals held throughout the seasons. On November 23rd, during the Niinamesai (New Harvest Festival), the 'Hyakoku Odori' is performed for approximately 20 minutes following the afternoon ceremonies. In the summer, on July 15th, the 'Chinowa-kuguri' ritual takes place. Visitors pass through a large straw ring (chinowa) placed at the foot of the stone steps before the worship hall, a traditional way to purify oneself during the summer. These events offer a unique way to experience Japan's deep-rooted nature worship.
Because different rituals are held at different times, the scenery and experience change with the seasons. Visiting during the Niinamesai in November allows you to witness the solemn and traditional atmosphere of the Hyakoku Odori. In mid-July, the Chinowa-kuguri provides a refreshing seasonal experience to endure the summer heat. During the day, you can enjoy the beauty of the wooden architecture and the surrounding greenery in a peaceful, quiet environment.
Within the shrine grounds, visitors can observe traditional Japanese architectural styles and a space that harmonizes perfectly with the natural environment. The stone torii gates and the landscape of lush greenery are excellent for understanding Japanese spiritual culture. During ritual periods, you can experience the traditional dances and the spiritual essence of Japan's seasonal transitions. It is a perfect way to spend a special, non-routine moment in time.

Nearby attractions include the 'Island Golf Resort Sanda' and 'Konishi Kankoen' for nature lovers. Depending on the season, you might also enjoy strawberry picking at 'Harada Ichigo Farm' or relaxing at the 'Sanda Natural Onsen: Suino-yu' hot spring facilities.
When visiting the shrine, please follow Japanese etiquette. Regarding payments, please prepare cash (Japanese Yen) for offerings (Saisen) or nearby small shops. English-language signage and staff support are limited, so it is helpful to check basic worship manners in advance. While no reservation is required for regular visits, please check the schedule for specific festivals. Photography may be restricted during sacred rituals or in certain areas; please be mindful of your surroundings. As the grounds include stone steps and natural terrain, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. For accessibility, please note that the terrain may be difficult for wheelchairs.
