Kobu Sugi is a natural Akita Sugi tree located in Kamikoani Village, Akita Prefecture, famous for its massive, striking bulge. The tree is estimated to be between 200 and 300 years old. Its most defining feature is the enormous bulge on its trunk, which reaches a circumference of up to 6.6m. The surrounding area is a dense forest of Sugi trees, some exceeding 40m in height, creating a breathtaking landscape of natural sculptural beauty. Currently managed as a Nature Observation and Education Forest and a mountain village plaza, the site offers well-maintained walking paths that allow visitors to observe the history and form of natural cedar up close.
This area of natural Akita Sugi forest was designated as a natural forest harvest experimental site in 1924 to study the structure and growth of Sugi trees. Since 1988, it has been designated as a Nature Observation and Education Forest to preserve the beauty of the natural forest and serve as a site for environmental education. The historical significance of the local natural Akita Sugi is profound; specimens have been used in exhibitions at the National Museum of Nature and Science and even in the construction of the Kyoto Imperial Visit Guest House, linking this forest to Japan's cultural and scientific history.

The primary focus is the tree itself, which gives the site its name. The tree possesses extraordinary dimensions: a trunk diameter of 1.20m, a maximum bulge width of 2.2m, and a circumference of 3.8m (reaching 6.6m at the bulge). The forest also contains trees reaching heights of 56m, creating a dense, majestic canopy. The site is well-equipped with signage, gazebos, and benches, providing an ideal environment to observe the intricate details of natural formations from a close distance.
While the striking natural forms can be enjoyed year-round, the forest's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, the lush green Sugi leaves create a vibrant, refreshing atmosphere. In autumn, the changing colors of the surrounding foliage add a new layer of beauty. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours when sunlight filters through the canopy, highlighting the intricate details of the massive bulge.
The main experience is forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) while walking along the maintained paths (such as the Forest Bathing Path 3). The paths are designed with handrails and stairs to help visitors navigate the terrain safely. Additionally, the presence of gazebos and benches allows visitors to pause and enjoy a quiet, meditative moment amidst the sounds of nature.
The site is nestled within the rich natural environment of Kamikoani Village. The surrounding area features signage that explains the history of the natural Sugi and provides a perfect setting for nature observation. After your walk, you can relax at the nearby mountain village plaza or designated rest areas to fully soak in the fresh forest air.
As you will be walking through a forest, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing are highly recommended. To preserve the environment of the Nature Observation and Education Forest, please note the following:
