HAKODATE ART EXHIBITION 2026 Vol.3 “Old Town” is a walking-style art event set in the Hakodate West District (Old Town), an area where Western culture blends with nostalgic, historic streetscapes. This event is produced by TERU, the vocalist of the legendary Japanese rock band GLAY.
The venue, the Hakodate West District, is characterized by its historic buildings and beautiful scenery. This exhibition is designed to help visitors rediscover the charm of the city through various artistic expressions: installations that treat entire spaces as works of art, photography exhibitions by Hakodate-born photographers, and a fusion of poetry and calligraphy within a designated Important Cultural Property.
The greatest charm of this event is the diverse range of artistic expressions unfolding across three distinct venues:
1. Odajima Suisan Food Products: Features an installation produced by TERU. This includes a Hakodate version of the popular "Character Exhibition" from Shibuya, Tokyo, and works themed around "Lines," allowing you to experience the space itself as art.
2. TSU@THE TABLE GALLERY: Hosts a photography exhibition by photographers from Hakodate. In addition to artists with close ties to TERU, such as Yusuke Oishi, Yosuke Baba, Takayuki Koike, and Kosutaro, the bassist of GLAY, JIRO, also participates. On the second floor, a warm exhibition themed around "Threads" will feature works by local calligraphers and even local kindergarten children.
3. Tachikawa Family Residence & Shop: Offers a sensory experience set against the backdrop of an Important Cultural Property. The venue features calligraphy-based works expressing poems written by GLAY's main composer, TAKURO, created by calligrapher Akiko Sasaki. Additionally, a special collaboration with the popular local shop "HAKODATE MATCHA STAND" will offer a limited-edition matcha cafe, alongside DJ sets by artist Azumi, creating a seamless blend of music, food, and historic architecture.
The event will be held during the following period:
Please check the information for each specific venue regarding exhibition details and event schedules (such as DJ sets) closer to the event date.
The event takes place at multiple locations within the Hakodate West District (Old Town).
| Facility Name | Features |
|---|---|
| Odajima Suisan Food Products | Installation by TERU |
| TSU@THE TABLE GALLERY | Photography exhibition by Hakodate photographers & collaboration exhibition on the 2nd floor |
| Tachikawa Family Residence & Shop | Poetry/Calligraphy in a historic building, limited matcha cafe, and DJ sets |
Visitors can move between venues using public transportation such as the Hakodate City Tram. We recommend strolling through the historic streets to visit each location.
This is a "walking-style" event involving multiple venues. Rather than visiting all at once, it is best to move between locations according to their unique characteristics. For example, you can enjoy a deeper experience by timing your visit to enjoy the limited-edition matcha at the Tachikawa Family residence or catching a live DJ set.
As many exhibits are "spatial installations," we recommend immersing yourself in the unique atmosphere of each venue. At the photography exhibition, you can discover new perspectives of Hakodate through the lens of local artists.
