The Zuiryu-ji Temple Light-up (officially titled 'Kosai Rikuri') is a special night viewing event held during the spring at the National Treasure Zuiryu-ji Temple in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. The greatest charm of this event lies in the 'art of light and sound,' where a mesmerizing illumination using five-colored lights is harmoniously blended with carefully selected original musical compositions. The sight of colorful lights dancing within the serene atmosphere of a Zen temple is so mystical that it makes you forget the everyday world. Furthermore, the event is characterized by its environmentally friendly operation, utilizing renewable energy.
Zuiryu-ji is a prestigious Zen temple established in the early Edo period, and its architectural beauty is officially recognized as a 'National Treasure.' The orderly layout of the temple buildings (Garan) symbolizes the spirituality of Zen and carries a profound historical weight. This light-up event seeks to fuse tradition with modernity by illuminating these historical structures with contemporary lighting technology. Additionally, the event is deeply connected to local culture and traditional crafts, featuring displays such as 'Mino Akari Art' made from Mino Washi paper.
At the venue, the lighting changes in synchronization with the music to illuminate major structures such as the Sanmon (Mountain Gate), Zendo (Zen Hall), and Daikuri (Monastery Kitchen). A must-see is the 'Corridor of Light' created by numerous lanterns lining the approach, including a large 2-meter tall lantern in front of the Sanmon and lantern objects at the entrance. The exhibition of the massive 3-meter 'Giant Flower' and the night viewing of the Daichado (Tea Hall) are also highly popular photogenic spots. The way the white gravel and the intricate details of the historic architecture emerge under the light is truly a masterpiece.
This event is primarily held as a special night viewing during the spring (from late April to early May). During the event hours (approximately 18:00 to 21:00), you can enjoy a completely different side of Zuiryu-ji than during the day. It is highly recommended to visit during the twilight to evening transition, as the lights gradually intensify and colors shift, creating the most dramatic scenery. Please note that schedules and times may change due to weather or seasonal progression, so we recommend checking the latest information in advance.
Beyond mere observation, the event offers an experience for all five senses. Immersing yourself in the light display while listening to original compositions like 'Gensou Zuiryu-ji' or 'Arrival of Spring' provides deep relaxation. You can also experience Japanese spiritual culture by viewing the 'Mino Akari Art' along the paths or offering a quiet prayer at the Hodo (Dharma Hall). As a photogenic destination, you are free to capture memories of the giant flowers and the illuminated architecture.
The area around Zuiryu-ji is dotted with spots to explore the history and culture of Takaoka City. It is easily accessible and within walking distance from Takaoka Station. The surrounding area offers diverse sightseeing opportunities, including spots related to Doraemon and historic streetscapes. There are also many restaurants near Takaoka Station, allowing you to enjoy local gourmet-food after your night viewing.
As this is an outdoor night event, please dress appropriately for the season. Since spring nights in Toyama can be chilly, we recommend bringing a light jacket or wrap.
