Zuihoji Park is a beautiful urban park located at an altitude of approximately 500m, at the highest point of the Arima Onsen hot spring district in Kita-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The park was developed on the former site of Zuihoji Temple, a temple of the Obaku sect. The scenery within the park is famous for its stunning autumn colors, which Toyotomi Hideyoshi reportedly praised by saying he could never tire of looking at them. Known by names such as 'Higurashi no Niwa' (The Garden of Sunset) and 'Kinshu-dani' (Brocade Valley), the park offers a serene space where nature and historical architecture blend seamlessly.
The history of this site dates back to the founding of Zuiho-an by Daikokuya Sōsetsu in 1604. Although it developed as a temple of the Obaku sect, the temple was dissolved in 1873 due to the movement to abolish Buddhism during the Meiji era. While it is now a well-maintained park, many vestiges of its past remain. For instance, the majestic gate relocated from Fushimi Momoyama Castle in 1868 and the stone Go board where Toyotomi Hideyoshi is said to have played a game of Go are tangible links to its storied past. Additionally, the presence of stone monuments featuring waka poetry from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu collection highlights the area's long-standing cultural significance.
The park is home to various historical structures that captivate visitors. The most iconic is the 'Former Zuihoji Sanmon' (Gate), which was moved from Fushimi Momoyama Castle. Other notable features include the 'Thirteen-Story Stone Pagoda' built in the late Edo period, various other stone towers, and the 'Stone Go Board' believed to have been used by Toyotimi Hideyoshi. Regarding natural beauty, the 'Tsutsumi-no-taki' waterfall and the seasonal changes of autumn leaves and cherry blossoms are highly recommended. These elements serve as vital links that convey the atmosphere of the ancient temple to the modern era.
While Zuihoji Park displays a different charm throughout the four seasons, it is particularly renowned as one of the best autumn foliage spots in the Kansai region, especially during late autumn (November to December). During this time, the park is bathed in vibrant, brilliant colors. In spring, the cherry blossoms provide a beautiful spectacle. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to clearly observe the details of the historical gates and stone monuments, or visit toward the evening to enjoy the tranquil and contemplative atmosphere.
The park is an ideal environment for a relaxing stroll. Visitors can wander through the paths while exploring historical buildings and stone monuments at a leisurely pace. Every year on November 2nd and 3rd, cultural events such as the 'Arima Grand Tea Ceremony' are held, allowing visitors to experience the local culture. It is a wonderful place to feel the harmony between historical heritage and the richness of nature.
Since the park is located at the highest point of the Arima Onsen area, the bustling hot spring town spreads out below. After your walk, you can enjoy staying at nearby ryokans or visiting local hot spring facilities. Other natural spots like 'Tsutsumi-no-taki Park' are also nearby, making it easy to include Zuihoji in a broader Arima sightseeing itinerary.
As the park features undulating terrain and slopes, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Regarding payments, while the park itself is free, nearby facilities and shops may accept cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards. English-language signage and staff support may be limited. The park is open at all times, but please check in advance if you plan to use specific nearby facilities.
