Zenrin-gai (Zenrin Sanjūka) is a historic temple district located southwest of Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, in a direction traditionally considered the 'back of the demon gate' in Feng Shui. At its heart lies Chosho-ji, the ancestral temple of the Tsugaru clan, surrounded by 33 Sōtō Zen temples arranged in an orderly fashion. It is rare in Japan to see such a high concentration of temples from the same sect, and the area is officially designated as a national historic site known as the 'Chosho-ji Gamae.' The straight paths, flanked by towering, majestic cedar trees, create a unique landscape where nature and history exist in perfect harmony.
Historically, this area served as the spiritual center for the Tsugaru clan. The 33 temples have preserved the traditions of the Sōtō Zen sect for generations, serving as a cornerstone of local faith and culture.
