The Sendai Teikenyoji Street Jazz Festival is a premier musical event held around the Jozenji-dori area in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Driven by the philosophy that "the street is the stage," "music should overflow with all genres," and "the community creates this together," the entire city becomes a vibrant musical stage. The music spans a vast spectrum, including jazz, rock, gospel, and popular music. It is one of Japan's largest music festivals, attracting numerous performers ranging from professionals to talented amateurs from both domestic and international backgrounds.
The inaugural festival was held in 1991. Its roots trace back to jazz performances held at the 'El Park Sendai' fashion building between 1987 and 1990. The event evolved into its current outdoor format through a vision to bring music under the beautiful zelkova trees of Jozenji-dori. Today, the festival is sustained by the passion of local citizens, volunteers, donations, and corporate sponsorships, establishing itself as a beloved autumn tradition in Sendai.
In addition to Jozenji-dori, approximately 100 stages are set up throughout the city, including Kotodai Park, Ichibancho, Nishi Park, Aoba-dori, the pedestrian deck at the Sendai Station West Exit, and even the outdoor entrances of various buildings. Because the stages are integrated into the streetscape, the distance between performers and the audience is incredibly close, creating an intimate and immersive atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy live performances while sipping drinks or enjoying food from local open-cafes and 'world kitchen' food stalls.
The event is typically held on the second Sunday of September and the day preceding it. It is a perfect time to feel the arrival of autumn alongside the beautiful city scenery. As a massive event attracting approximately 700,000 visitors over the two days, the streets become very lively and crowded during the daytime.
Beyond just listening to music, the best way to experience the festival is by walking through the city to discover various stages. At the street-side stages, you can feel the raw energy and passion of the performers up close. You can also enjoy a seamless blend of urban exploration and music by visiting nearby cafes and restaurants while moving between stages.
The festival covers a wide area in the heart of Sendai, centered on Jozenji-dori and extending to Kotodai Park, Nishi Park, Aoba-dori, and the pedestrian decks around Sendai Station. This allows visitors to easily explore local cafes, restaurants, and shopping facilities while enjoying the musical atmosphere.
During the festival, certain sections of Jozenji-dori undergo traffic restrictions to become pedestrian-friendly zones. Since you will be walking extensively between stages, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. As music flows through the entire city, please be mindful of your surroundings and follow local etiquette to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.
