Zao Onsen Ski Resort, located in Zao Onsen, Yamagata City, is one of Japan's most iconic ski resorts. Spanning the western foot of Mount Zao, it boasts one of the largest continuous ski areas in Japan. The greatest highlight is the world-famous 'Snow Monsters' (Juhyo) that appear during winter. These massive, frost-covered trees create a surreal, mystical landscape that captivates travelers from all over the globe.
Since its opening in 1925, this area has developed alongside the rich hot spring culture of Zao Onsen. The vast ski area spreads out in a fan shape from the mountain summit, offering a wide variety of terrain and much-changing course layouts. For many years, it has been a place where both skiers and tourists seeking relaxation in hot springs have gathered, growing together with the local community.
You can enjoy different facets of the mountain throughout the season. The frost-covered trees (Juhyo) are a must-see, particularly from January to February. From the summit station rooftop, you can overlook the vast expanse of snow-covered trees and even experience moving through the snow. Additionally, from late December to late February, the night illuminations offer a magical way to view the brilliantly lit 'Snow Monsters.' Whether you are here to ski or simply ride the ropeway to enjoy the view, the scenery is spectacular.
The best season is from December to March, with January and February being the peak months for the most beautiful frost-covered trees. While daytime skiing is wonderful, the night illuminations provide a truly special experience. However, please note that weather conditions at the upper elevations can change rapidly, often bringing thick fog, so be aware of the changing visibility. Since operating hours may vary by slope, we recommend checking the schedule in advance.
The vast terrain offers diverse courses suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. For example, the 'Yokokura Kabe' and 'Chuo Kabe' are steep, challenging courses designed for advanced skiers looking to test their skills. Conversely, there are plenty of beginner-friendly areas for those just starting out. Even if you do not bring your own gear, many visitors enjoy the scenery by taking the ropeway to the summit area.
Surrounding the ski resort is a charming, historic hot spring town. A classic way to enjoy your trip is to head to the hot springs to relax after your mountain activities. The Zao Onsen area in Yamagata City is well-equipped with various accommodations and restaurants, making it an ideal base for enjoying your winter stay in Yamagata.
The summit area in winter is extremely cold and weather conditions can be harsh. Thorough cold-weather protection is essential. When viewing the frost-covered trees, please wear heavy-duty thermal clothing as temperatures drop significantly. Additionally, skiing or snowboarding outside of designated courses is strictly prohibited. Please follow all rules and stay within the safe, designated areas.
