Located in Zama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, "Zama City Sunflower Square" is a spectacular destination where approximately 550,000 sunflowers bloom across a vast area. The striking contrast between the bright blue sky and the vivid yellow sunflowers makes it a beloved symbol of summer. The peak viewing season occurs from early to mid-August, attracting many visitors looking for beautiful scenery.
The history of this site dates back to 1993. It began when the local agricultural cooperative planted sunflowers—the official flower of Zama City—as a way to revitalize abandoned or unused farmland. As the popularity of the sunflowers grew, the event evolved into the current "Sunflower Festival" format starting in the year 2000. Today, it is firmly established as a quintessential summer tradition in Zama City.
The primary attraction is the overwhelming scale of the sunflower field, covering 5.5 hectares. The sight of endless yellow blooms is particularly breathtaking under a clear sky, making it a highly popular spot for photography. During the annual Zama Sunflower Festival in mid-August, visitors can enjoy buying freshly cut sunflowers, as well as local agricultural products and regional specialties. Occasionally, unique activities like sweetfish (ayu) catching events are also held.
The best season to visit is from July to August, with the absolute peak occurring between early and mid-August when the flowers are in full bloom. While bright daylight hours offer the most vivid contrast against the blue sky, visiting in the late afternoon is also recommended; the setting sun casts a unique, warm light over the fields, creating a different and beautiful atmosphere than the midday sun.
Beyond strolling through the sunflower fields, you can indulge in local flavors during the festival. Various food stalls offer local gourmet-style treats and regional specialties. You might also find opportunities to purchase cut sunflowers or participate in seasonal activities like sweetfish catching. It is a wonderful way to experience the vibrant colors and flavors of the Japanese summer.
Zama City Sunflower Square is located near the Sagami River. In addition to the main Zama venue, sunflower viewing is also possible at the Yotsuya venue. The surrounding area is characterized by the lush, natural landscapes of the Sagami River basin.
Since you will be walking across a vast outdoor area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. As this is an outdoor activity in the heat of summer, please bring a hat, sun protection (such as sunscreen), and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
