Yurigaoka Park is a comprehensive park spanning 25.4 hectares in Kita-ku, Sapporo. Since its opening in 1983, it has been beloved as one of Sapporo's representative flower parks. The park's centerpiece is the "World Lily Plaza," where approximately 100 varieties of lilies are planted. Through its well-maintained facilities and diverse plant life, the park offers a place where visitors can experience the delicate beauty of nature up close through every season.
The park holds historical significance as it was developed as a project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Showa's reign. In 1986, it served as the venue for the '86 Sapporo Flower and Greenery Expo, which led to the development of its current facilities, including the greenhouse, various world gardens, and the Lily Train. Since then, it has functioned as a botanical garden promoting urban greening, serving as a vital space for both local residents and tourists to connect with nature.
The park is divided into several themed areas. The central "World Lily Plaza" showcases a spectacular display of various lily species depending on the season. Other notable attractions include the "Rock Garden," which features alpine plants that are difficult to cultivate in mainland Japan, a greenhouse displaying seasonal flora, and the charming Lily Train that circulates through the grounds. These facilities provide a valuable opportunity to observe the diverse ecology and forms of various plant species.
The botanical stars of the park change with the seasons. The peak season arrives in summer; white lilies begin blooming in mid-June, and by mid-July, approximately 15,000 lily bulbs are in full bloom. From May to November, visitors can enjoy the vibrant colors of wildflowers and alpine plants in the Rock Garden. Please note that most facilities, such as the greenhouse and the Lily Train, begin their seasonal operations around late April, so it is important to check the specific operating schedule before your visit.
Beyond simple strolls, the park offers activities to deepen your botanical knowledge. You can participate in volunteer-led walking tours (held every Saturday) or attend various plant exhibitions and workshops. The park is also equipped with recreational facilities, including a playground, a lawn area, a park golf course, and a gateball court, making it an ideal spot for outdoor leisure and family activities.
The area surrounding the park consists of residential and commercial zones in Sapporo's Kita-ku. Access is convenient by car via the nearby National Route 231 (Ishikari Highway). For those using public transportation, several bus stops serve the area, providing connections to central Sapporo and surrounding districts.
As the park covers a vast area and temperatures fluctuate significantly by season, please dress appropriately for the weather. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the trails. While parking (Lots P1, P2, and P3) is free, please note that access hours vary between the summer (April 29 – October 31) and winter seasons. Parking lots tend to be crowded on weekends and holidays, so consider using temporary parking areas. Additionally, please check the operating days for specific facilities, as the greenhouse and garden shop are typically closed on Mondays.
