Yurahime Jinja is a significant shrine located in Nishinoshima Town, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture. Its history is exceptionally ancient; records indicate it was granted official status as a Kansha (government-sponsored shrine) as early as 842 during the reign of Emperor Ninmyo. During the late Heian period, it held the prestigious position of Ichinomiya, the highest-ranking shrine in the Oki Province, playing a central role in the spiritual life of the region. The origins of the main shrine are very old, having once been located at Torozokihama on Chiburijima Island. After being moved to Yura in Nishinoshima, many local legends emerged. One famous legend tells of Yurahime-no-mikoto crossing the sea in a basket; as she dipped her hand into the water, the sea creatures (Torozoku) pulled at her, a story that explains the natural phenomena of the local waters. These tales have helped preserve the unique cultural bond between the local people and the sea through generations.
