Located in the Yura Peninsula area of Tsukumi City, southern Oita Prefecture, this site is home to more than 5,000 Kawazu cherry trees. The Kawazu cherry blossom is a specific variety known for its large, vibrant pink petals and an earlier blooming season compared to the standard Somei-Yoshino variety. This area is renowned for the seamless fusion of the beautiful Rias coastline and the vivid colors of the cherry blossoms. On clear days, the striking contrast between the deep blue sea, the bright sky, and the soft pink blossoms creates a breathtaking visual experience that captures the very essence of the changing seasons.
The development of the Kawazu cherry blossoms on the Yura Peninsula has been a community-driven effort since January 2005. Through the persistent dedication of local residents and the generous donation of saplings, the number of trees has steadily increased over the years. This project was born from a desire to preserve the local natural environment while sharing the seasonal beauty with others. Today, the site stands as a symbol of a landscape coexisting with nature, built through the strength and passion of the local community.
The primary highlight is the vast number of Kawazu cherry trees lining the roads. Because the trees bloom along the coastal roads, visitors can enjoy the integrated scenery of the ocean and the blossoms both from a car window and while walking. The view is particularly spectacular during midday on sunny days, when the sunlight enhances the vivid pink hues of the petals against the deep blue of the sea. Since Kawazu cherry blossoms tend to have larger and more intensely colored flowers than typical cherry blossoms, the landscape feels exceptionally lush and celebratory.
The blooming season typically begins in early February, reaching its peak around mid-February. Because these flowers bloom earlier than the standard cherry blossom season, it is an ideal time for those who wish to experience the arrival of spring ahead of the usual schedule. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours when the contrast between the blue sea and pink blossoms is most striking. Choosing a clear, sunny day will provide the most spectacular backdrop for photography.
This area is perfect for a scenic coastal drive. Most visitors enjoy the landscape by driving along the coastline, stopping at preferred spots to admire the view. The surrounding Rias coastline offers a beautiful natural setting for both driving and leisurely strolls. Occasionally, local sightseeing bus tours are organized to share this spectacular seasonal view with a wider audience.
To the south of the Yura Peninsula lies Saiki City, which features famous spots such as the Bungo Fuchigaura (known for its Meoto Iwa rocks) and the Sekai Beach, selected as one of Japan's top hundred water bathing places. Additionally, the tip of the peninsula near Hodoshima is known as a base for tuna fishing, making the surrounding waters a rich and productive fishing ground. You can easily combine a visit to the cherry blossoms with a tour of these nearby coastal landmarks.
