The Yuntanza Museum is a cultural and historical facility located in Yomitan Village, Okinawa, situated right beside the World Heritage-listed Zakimi Castle Ruins. More than just a display facility, this museum serves as a hub for deeply understanding the rich nature, unique folklore, and the complex history of Okinawa. The exhibition areas, divided into the 1st and 2nd floors, showcase the architectural-sophistication of the Ryukyu Kingdom's 'Gusuku' (castles), the poignant memories of the Battle of Okinawa, and precious materials documenting local daily life. Visiting the museum before or after exploring the castle ruins will provide a much deeper, three-dimensional understanding of the historical context.
The history of this site is inextricably linked to the adjacent Zakimi Castle. Zakimi Castle is one of the prominent Gusuku of the Ryukyu Kingdom, said to have been built in the early 15th century by Hosokawa Maru of Yomiyama. The castle walls are famous for their beautiful, gentle curves, showcasing a unique Ryukyuan architectural style that blends defensive functionality with aesthetic elegance. Furthermore, this region holds a heavy history, having been used as a military base and anti-aircraft position during the Battle of Okinawa. The museum preserves both the peaceful cultural heritage of the area and the memories of the modern war through its diverse exhibits.
The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of themes. The 1st floor focuses on the structure of the Zakimi Castle Ruins and the natural and cultural heritage of Yomitan Village. Specifically, the explanations regarding the arched structures of the walls and the stone-stacking techniques are essential for appreciating the value of the World Heritage site. The 2nd floor features archaeological materials, folklore, and dioramas depicting the Battle of Okinawa, allowing visitors to learn about the lives of those who endured the waves of history. The dioramas of 'Gama' (natural caves) and 'Kameko-baka' (turtle-shell shaped graves) are particularly helpful for visually understanding Okinawa's unique cultural landscape.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and visiting during the bright daylight hours is ideal. We especially recommend visiting in the afternoon on a clear day; after exploring the exhibits, you can head to the observation points at the nearby Zakimi Castle Ruins. From the top of the walls, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the East China Sea, the surrounding villages, and even the Kerama Islands on clear days. The changing scenery toward evening is also beautiful, allowing you to enjoy both historical learning and natural landscapes. Please note that the museum is closed on Wednesdays, so please check the schedule before your visit.
