Yunooku Inokashira Rindo is a scenic forest road approximately 20km long, connecting Yunooku in Minobu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, to Inokashira in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The route begins from the Yunooku settlement via Prefectural Road 415 on the Yamanashi side and continues toward the Shizuoka side. Its most significant feature is the ability to view Mount Fuji from its western side, offering a unique and majestic perspective of the mountain that is rarely seen from other standard routes.
The road is managed by the Kyonan Forest Management Office in Yamanashi Prefecture and the Environmental Forest Division of Fujinomiya City. The route traverses the Tenzusan mountain range, and the Yunooku-Inokashira Tunnel is located at Inokashira Pass (also known as Kabuto Pass), which serves as the border between the two prefectures. This area is strictly managed to preserve the rich natural environment and the forest ecosystem while serving as a vital transport route around the Mount Fuji area.
The primary highlight of this forest road is the unfolding panorama of Mount Fuji as you drive. The view from the western side provides a distinct vantage point compared to more common eastern or southern approaches. Additionally, the Shizuoka side features a paragliding takeoff site, linking the terrestrial beauty with the aerial scenery of the region. Throughout the journey, travelers can enjoy the dynamic changes in topography created by the surrounding mountains and the natural landscape.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The best time to visit is from May to October. However, please note that the road is closed during the winter season (from late November to mid-May), so careful planning is required. On clear days, the silhouette of Mount Fuji becomes exceptionally sharp, creating a stunning contrast between the blue sky and the lush greenery of the mountains. Driving during daylight hours is highly recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the mountain landscape.
This route is a popular destination for driving and motorcycle touring. While the road can be narrow with many curves, requiring careful driving, the experience of navigating through such a rich natural environment is truly unique. There are several parking areas and rest spots along the way, allowing travelers to pull over safely to admire the views and take photographs.
From the Yamanashi side, you can access the Yunooku settlement via Shimobe Onsen. On the Shizuoka side, the area is near Fujinomiya City and features facilities related to paragliding. The area around Inokashira Pass, located in the middle of the Tenzusan mountain range, is a highly preserved natural environment.
As there are limited shops or facilities along the forest road, it is highly recommended to bring your own drinking water and snacks. Due to the narrow sections of the road, please prioritize safety and drive carefully.
