Yumori Park is a beautifully developed natural area situated along the Kawayama River, a tributary of the Kiso River in the Kawakami district of Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. Since its development began in 1960, it has become a premier destination for enjoying natural landscapes. The area is also known as the "Yumori Fuchi Scenic Forest" or "Yumori Forest Sports Forest," characterized by lush forests of Kiso Hinoki cypress and Hinoki cypress, clear streams, and a series of five waterfalls. Since the late 1980s, the area has been specifically developed as a famous spot for autumn colors, with over 15,000 maple trees planted to create a stunning seasonal spectacle.
This region has a long history as a producer of Kiso Hinoki cypress, maintaining a rich forest environment for centuries. As the park was developed, intentional efforts were made to plant maple trees to ensure that visitors could enjoy the changing seasons, moving beyond simple nature conservation to active tourism. Additionally, the area holds cultural significance through the annual "Yumori Momiji Matsuri" (Maple Festival) held in early November, which celebrates the local natural beauty. The area also has deep historical ties to transportation, with the former Maruno Station once serving this scenic region.
The greatest attraction of Yumori Park is the five waterfalls scattered throughout the valley: Ryujin Falls, Borin Falls, Doana Falls, Aze Falls, and Hitotsu Falls. The walking paths around Ryujin Falls, in particular, allow visitors to stroll while admiring the clear water and vibrant autumn leaves. The "Momiji Bridge" offers a spectacular view of the river flowing below and the colorful foliage surrounding it. In autumn, the entire landscape is transformed into a vivid tapestry of color.
Activities vary by season. In spring, you can enjoy blooming flowers, while summer offers the refreshing atmosphere of the Kawayama River and lush green forests. The best season is autumn (late October to mid-November) when the 15,000+ maple trees turn brilliant colors. During this time, the "Yumori Momiji Matsuri" features photo contests, walking events, and even trout fishing competitions. Winter offers a peaceful, quiet time to experience the stillness of nature.
A variety of outdoor activities are available. For camping, there are two main areas: the "Fureai Zone" (45 bungalows) and the "Ryujin/National Park Zone" (74 bungalows). From early April to early November, the trout fishing area is open, allowing you to enjoy fresh trout caught on the spot. The park is also a popular spot for hiking and forest sports, making it an ideal place for outdoor recreation.
The beautiful Yumori Valley extends throughout the surrounding area. Nearby scenic spots like the Chiki Gorge also offer wonderful natural experiences. After hiking or camping, visitors can enjoy various local accommodations and dining options within the Nakatsugawa area.
Since the terrain can be uneven or steep, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes. Paths near the waterfalls may be slippery due to moisture or weather conditions. Please note that some paths may be temporarily closed due to heavy rain; always check the latest local information before your visit.
