Yukuyuyama Park (locally known as 'Oyama') is a historic urban park located in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. Nestled at the foot of the Higashiyama mountain range, this park serves as a beloved community space where lush nature and historical vestiges coexist. The grounds feature expansive open lawns, the scenic Suisui Pond, the gourd-shaped Hyotan Pond, and seasonal gardens such as the iris garden and cherry blossom groves. The park's history dates back to the 1917 planning project celebrating the 300th anniversary of Nagaoka's establishment. Developed through the dedication of the local community and the legacy of the Sosai Shrine, the park has been a cornerstone of Nagaoka since its official opening in 1919. It serves as a vital cultural hub, housing numerous stone monuments related to the Nagaoka Clan and significant historical figures. In recent years, the park has embraced modern evolution, integrating digital technology like AR (Augmented Reality) to preserve and explain its traditions for a new generation.
There is much to discover within the park. In spring, the 'Senbonzakura' (thousand cherry blossoms) create a breathtaking pink canopy that draws crowds from across the region. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil scenery of the Suisui and Hyotan ponds or engage in a cultural journey through the Nagaoka Local History Museum. A unique feature is the AR-based monument service, which allows visitors to use their smartphones to visualize and understand the historical background of the stone monuments through audio and visual guides. For families, the small zoo—featuring Japanese macaques and crested ibises—alongside playgrounds with swings and large slides, provides an engaging environment for children.
The park's charm shifts beautifully with the seasons. Spring (March–April) is the most spectacular season, when the thousand cherry blossoms are in full bloom, painting the park in shades of pink. Early summer (May–June) brings the elegance of blooming irises alongside the water features. Autumn offers a vibrant display of colorful foliage set against the backdrop of the Higashiyama mountains, while winter provides a serene atmosphere for quiet walks through the snow. Yukuyuyama Park offers diverse ways to enjoy the outdoors. You can relax on the vast lawns for a picnic or explore the historical paths using the 'Smartphone History Tour' to experience history through AR technology. The park also features traditional kamado (cooking hearths) in six locations; please note that using fire requires prior permission and specific conditions. The small zoo offers a wonderful opportunity for children to observe local wildlife up close in a natural setting.
The area surrounding the park is rich in cultural landmarks. The Nagaoka Local History Museum, a building designed to resemble a castle, is a great place to deepen your understanding of the region.
