The Yusumizugaura Terraced Fields, located in the Nanyo region of Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, are a highly distinctive agricultural landscape. These terraced fields, formed by stacking small stones on steep mountain slopes, are famously known as the "Pyramid of the Uwa Sea." Beyond their aesthetic beauty, this landscape is officially designated as a "National Important Cultural Landscape," representing the wisdom of people who have lived in harmony with the harsh natural environment for centuries.

History & Cultural Background

The history of these terraced fields dates back to the Edo period. Legend says that the third lord of the Uwajima Clan allowed local residents to freely cultivate the mountains in exchange for mandatory sardine fishing. During the Meiji era, as sericulture (silkworm farming) flourished, more stone walls were built to cultivate mulberry trees for silkworm feed. Historically, the area also produced sweet potatoes and wheat, serving as a vital food supply hub. Today, the landscape is preserved through the dedicated efforts of the NPO "Dandah Protecting Society."

The most striking feature is the contrast between the stone walls descending toward the sea and the lush fields in between. With an average slope of 40 degrees, the stone steps reaching over 1 meter in height create a truly awe-inspiring sight. As part of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage scenery (88th view), visitors can enjoy the simultaneous beauty of historical rural landscapes and the deep blue waters of the Uwa Sea. The scenery changes beautifully with each season, offering new discoveries every time you visit.

From April to May, the region celebrates the potato harvest. During this time, the "Furusato Dandan Festival" is held, where you can witness the lively scene of the first potato harvests. In August and September, the area sometimes hosts the "Dandah Light-up," where bamboo and candles create a mystical, glowing atmosphere across the terraced fields at night.

At the base of the fields, "Dandan Chaya" offers delicious local cuisine made with fresh, locally sourced vegetables and seafood, allowing you to relax and enjoy the bounty of nature. Additionally, the shop "Dandan-ya" sells local specialties, including "Danchu," a unique shochu made from the terraced fields' potatoes. It is a wonderful spot to experience the local food culture.

The area surrounding the fields is rich in nature. You can find facilities for fishing and stays at local fishing家 (fishermen's) guesthouses, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the gifts of the sea and mountains. The area is also close to spots related to the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.

Because the terrain is steep, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Since some paths can be unstable, sneakers or trekking shoes are highly recommended.
