Yukitaniya Dam Forest Park Karumai is a natural park located in Karumai Town, Kuno District, Iwate Prefecture, surrounded by a dam lake and lush forests. The most striking feature of this park is its ever-changing seasonal scenery. In spring, approximately 150,000 tulips bloom across a 7,000-square-meter flower field, creating a breathtaking landscape beneath a symbolic 16-meter tall windmill with a 20-meter diameter blade. The park is a popular destination for strolls, camping, and relaxation, offering a harmonious blend of man-made structures and natural beauty.
This area has a long history of charcoal production. Inside the park, you can visit the 'Charcoal Museum,' which houses about 170 items related to the local climate and traditional charcoal-making culture. The park was developed alongside the construction of the Yukitaniya Dam, evolving into a vital hub of water and greenery that represents the unique industrial and natural heritage of the region.
The park offers diverse spots for visitors to enjoy. The absolute must-see is the tulip field and the windmill observatory during the spring. Another highlight is the 'Memorial Bridge,' a 154-meter long red suspension bridge spanning the Yukitaniya Dam lake. It is a perfect spot for walking while enjoying the views of fresh greenery in summer or vibrant autumn colors in fall. Other facilities include the 'Thousand Stage' which can accommodate 1,000 people, the Charcoal Museum, hydrangea gardens, and patches of Katakuri (dogtooth violet) flowers, offering a rich blend of nature and culture.
You can experience different facets of nature depending on when you visit. From late April to mid-May, the 'Forest, Water, and Tulip Festival' brings the most colorful spectacle with 150,000 tulips in full bloom. In summer, the park is a lively camping destination with blooming hydrangeas, while autumn brings beautiful foliage around the dam lake. The park is generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but please note that the operating hours for shops and restaurants may vary by season.
There are many ways to enjoy the outdoors here. You can stay overnight at the campsite to truly immerse yourself in nature. For a local taste, the park's restaurant serves treats like soft-serve ice cream made with 'Sarnashi' (hardy kiwi), a local specialty. Additionally, the 'Many Side House,' a large wooden-deck-style rest area near the campsite, provides tables and chairs, making it an ideal spot for picnics or relaxing during your stroll.
The park is nestled in a quiet, serene environment surrounded by forests and the dam lake. It is a perfect stop when traveling through the scenic routes of Iwate Prefecture, offering a deep connection to the natural world and local flavors like the seasonal Sarnashi fruit.
