Yugo Onsen, located in Mimasaka City, Okayama Prefecture, is a prestigious hot spring destination boasting over 1,200 years of history. As one of the three famous hot springs of Mimasaka, it is widely celebrated as a 'skin-beautifying spring.' The area is also known as 'Sagi-no-yu' (Heron's Spring), originating from a legend where a white heron healed its wounded leg in these waters. The spring water is a low-concentration, weakly alkaline solution containing sodium, calcium, and chloride, making it exceptionally gentle on the skin. The town is lined with atmospheric inns and hotels, offering a space where relaxation meets discovery through its unique blend of hot springs, toy culture, model trains, and local cuisine.
The history of this area is said to have begun when the monk Ennin of Enryaku-ji witnessed a white heron healing itself during his travels. Historically, it served as a place for 'Toji' (hot spring therapy), where people would soak in warm waters for long periods to maintain health. Since the 1990s, the area has strengthened its identity as a 'health resort,' with the development of sports facilities such as rugby and soccer fields. Furthermore, in recent years, Yugo Onsen has successfully branded itself as a 'Toy Town,' developing into a cultural hub where visitors of all generations can enjoy the Modern Toy Museum and various model train exhibitions.
The 'Karakuri Clock' and the 'Sagi-yu Bridge' at the entrance of the town serve as warm welcomes to visitors. Throughout the streets, you can find various foot baths (ashiyu) and public bathhouses, allowing for a relaxing soak during a stroll. A major highlight is the variety of museums, including those showcasing model trains, antique music boxes, and Showa-era toys, providing a delightful mix of nostalgic hot spring atmosphere and intellectual curiosity.
In the early morning, you can witness the breathtaking sea of clouds from nearby observation decks. The natural scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, offering diverse landscapes. Please note that operating hours for facilities and public baths vary, so checking in advance is recommended. At night, the town is softly illuminated, creating a serene and romantic atmosphere.
Beyond soaking in the hot springs, Yugo Onsen offers diverse activities. At the Modern Toy Museum and model train exhibits, you can touch upon Japanese culture and the history of play through displays and hands-on experiences.
