Yugendo Cave is a natural cave museum located in Higashiyama Town, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. Discovered in 1980, this limestone cave exposes geological layers from approximately 350 million years ago, preserving the visage of the ancient Earth. Inside, you will find a mysterious underground lake glowing in emerald green, alongside beautiful stalactites and stalactites. Additionally, the cave is known as a 'Love Power Spot' because visitors can find heart-shaped patterns naturally formed within the stones.
The geological layers here date back to the Middle Paleozoic era, and geological evidence suggests this area was once a shallow seabed. The cave walls preserve fossils of ancient marine life, such as crinoids, trilobites, fusulinids, and ancient corals. In particular, the crinoid calyx fossils found here are academically significant as they are among the first of their kind discovered on solid rock in Japan. Furthermore, the area across from the cave exit has long been a site of spiritual devotion, historically associated with the Kannon mountain deity.
