Yufuin Station is a JR Kyudai Main Line station located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. Completed in 1990, the station was designed by one of Japan's most celebrated architects, Arata Isozaki. The building features a sophisticated black exterior and a central concourse with a breathtaking 12-meter high atrium. The design utilizes a 'latch-less' structure without traditional ticket gates, allowing tourists to move smoothly to the platforms. Beyond being a transit point, the station functions as a cultural space, housing an event hall and gallery.
The design of the station is inspired by the concept of a chapel, blending modern aesthetics with a sense of serenity. While it is a wooden structure, its design is incredibly refined and sophisticated. The station serves as a hub for interaction between local residents and tourists, acting as more than just a passage but a place for cultural exchange. Additionally, the Yufin Tourist Information Center is located within the station, reinforcing its role as the essential gateway to the region.
The most striking structural feature is the 12-meter high open atrium, which provides a sense of immense freedom and light to all visitors. Another unique feature is the footbath (ashiyu) located on Platform 1, which uses local hot spring water, allowing travelers to relax while waiting for their trains. The station also features the melody 'Elegant Trip' by Minoru Motani to set a sophisticated atmosphere. For convenience, the 'Yufuin Chikki' luggage forwarding service is also located nearby, making sightseeing much easier.
The station is designed with large glass doors separating the concourse and the platforms to minimize the impact of external weather. During the winter or colder months, the waiting area is equipped with floor heating, ensuring a warm and comfortable experience. Regardless of the season, visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to fully appreciate the interplay of light within the modern architectural space.
A primary experience at the station is enjoying the footbath on Platform 1 (a paid service). The station also serves as a central hub for local activities; at the Tourist Information Center, you can book horse-drawn carriages (tsuji-basha), sightseeing taxis, or arrange bicycle rentals (Rakuchari) and car rentals. It is the perfect place to prepare for your exploration of the Yufuin area.
Immediately outside the station is the Station Front Street, lined with numerous restaurants, accommodations, and souvenir shops. The luggage forwarding service located across from the station provides excellent support for travelers managing heavy bags. As the gateway to the Yufuin Onsen area, the location offers exceptional convenience for all visitors.
The station is barrier-free, with ramps and level crossings connecting the platforms for easy access. When using the footbath, please be mindful of others and follow local etiquette. Payments at the station and nearby facilities generally accept cash, credit cards, and major IC cards.
