Yudagawa Onsen Bairin Koen is a beautiful park located in the Yudagawa Onsen area of Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. It features approximately 300 red and white plum trees and is situated on a high vantage point at the foot of Mount Kinbo, offering a panoramic view of the hot spring town below. It is one of the most famous spots in the Shonai region for witnessing the arrival of spring through the blooming of plum blossoms.
This area has been renowned for its Yudagawa Onsen since ancient times, developing within a rich natural environment. The cultivation of plum trees in this park is part of a long-standing culture of appreciating the changing seasons. In particular, the 'Plum Festival' held in late March is a cherished local tradition where people gather to share seasonal flavors and cultural heritage.
The park is filled with about 300 red and white plum trees, creating a vibrant landscape of colorful blossoms. Because it is located on a hill, visitors can enjoy the seasonal scenery while looking down at the charming streets of Yudagawa Onsen. The best time to visit is from late March to early April. During this period, the 'Plum Festival' is held, often featuring 'Nodate' (an outdoor traditional tea ceremony). Beyond spring, the park offers beautiful scenery for every season: fresh greenery in early summer, colorful autumn leaves, and serene snowscapes in winter.
During the Plum Festival, you may experience 'Nodate,' where local innkeepers serve matcha and traditional sweets in an outdoor setting. There are also opportunities to witness 'Yudagawa Kagura,' a traditional local dance. Nearby ryokans often serve seasonal delicacies, such as dishes made with fresh bamboo shoots (Moso Takenoko), adding to the culinary experience.
The park is nestled within the Yudagawa Onsen town, making it easy to combine a stroll through the plum grove with a visit to the hot spring district. There are many traditional inns (ryokan) in the vicinity where you can enjoy day-use baths, overnight stays, and seasonal cuisine. Nearby attractions like Hakusan-jima island are also within reach.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the park. The park is equipped with restrooms (1 male, 1 female, and 1 universal design/accessible toilet). Please note that free Wi-Fi is not available within the park. While the park is open to the public at all times, please be mindful of the local residents and guests in the nearby hot spring area by maintaining a quiet and respectful atmosphere.
