Yubara Onsen
8 min di letturaOverview & Charm
Yubara Onsen is a historic hot spring village located in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. This region is blessed with numerous naturally occurring hot springs that have been utilized by many for centuries. Nestled within a rich natural environment, many accommodations offer open-air baths or private rental baths, providing the perfect setting to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find true relaxation.
History & Cultural Background
The history of Yubara Onsen is profound, having served as a healing destination for a very long time. According to local legends, a bathhouse was established for Ofuku, the mother of Ukita Hideie (a prominent vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi), to aid her recovery. Ofuku is described as a woman who lived a remarkable life during the Sengoku period and later became a concubine of Hideyoshi. Furthermore, this region is well-known for its history of 'Tatara' ironmaking since the Kofun period. Because Tatara ironmaking required immense labor, the hot springs played a vital role as a place for workers to recuperate from their strenuous tasks.

Main Highlights
The greatest charm of Yubara Onsen lies in its rich spring quality and the immersive bathing-in-nature experience. Most accommodations feature open-air baths, allowing guests to soak while enjoying the surrounding scenery. A unique feature of the area is the 'Sunayu,' a communal open-air bath managed and opened by the local community. At nearby inns, you can experience deep Japanese hot spring culture through seasonal meals made with local ingredients and the comfort of uniquely designed guest rooms.
Seasonal & Time-of-Day Recommendations
The hot spring village reveals different faces depending on the season.
