Yotsuya no Senmaida is a stunning collection of stone-walled rice terraces situated on the slopes of Mt. Kurakake in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. Recognized as one of Japan's three great stone-walled terraced fields, the landscape consists of approximately 400 rice paddies spread across an elevation of 220m to 420m, creating a magnificent layered view. Clear water springing from the mountains flows through three distinct streams to nourish the fields, preserving the quintessential Japanese landscape where nature and human activity have coexisted for centuries. This is a place where you can feel the weight of history, maintained by the local community to protect this precious heritage.

History & Cultural Background

These terraces are the result of the immense effort of ancestors who painstakingly stacked stones over many years to create arable land. Today, about 20 farming households continue to cultivate these 400 paddies, making this a "living cultural asset" rather than just a scenic spot. In 2019, as part of a Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries project, the "Tanada Card" (Terraced Field Card) was created to communicate the charm and preservation efforts of these fields. Yotsuya no Senmaida is the only site in Aichi Prefecture to have such a card, highlighting the vital importance of local conservation efforts.
