Yohashira Shrine is a significant spiritual landmark located in the center of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Its most distinctive feature is the simultaneous enshrinement of the 'Four Pillars' (Yohashira) of deities, a rare occurrence in Japan. By bringing together the unique powers of these four gods, the shrine is worshipped as the 'God of Connecting Wishes,' a place where diverse prayers are woven into reality. Thanks to its excellent accessibility—just a short walk from Matsumoto Station—it is an ideal spot to visit during a sightseeing tour of the city.
Believed to have been founded in 1879 (Meiji 12), the shrine holds deep roots in Japanese mythology. The four deities enshrined here—Ame-no-Minakanushi-no-Kami, Takamimusubi-no-Kami, Kamimusubi-no-Kami, and Amaterasu-Omikami—represent a spectrum of cosmic forces, from the origin of the universe to the blessings of the sun. This combination of deities makes the shrine a sacred space for the cycle of life, human connections, and the creation of all things, a tradition carefully preserved and cherished by the local community.
The main sanctuary (Honden) exudes a profound sense of sanctity and sacred atmosphere. Within the grounds, you will also find sub-shrines such as Ebisu Shrine, each symbolizing different blessings. At the amulet and stamp booth, you can find Goshuin (sacred calligraphy stamps) with powerful, minimalist designs, as well as a wide variety of Omamori (amulets) for health, traffic safety, and academic success. The scenery of the shrine grounds changes beautifully with the seasons, offering new discoveries with every visit.
Yohashira Shrine offers a beautiful way to experience the changing seasons. In spring, the cherry blossoms harmonize with the historic architecture, while in autumn, the vibrant foliage adds a touch of elegance. Since the shrine grounds are open 24 hours, you can experience different atmospheres depending on when you visit—from the profound silence of the early morning to the tranquil, contemplative mood of dusk. Please note, however, that if you wish to receive a Goshuin or purchase amulets, you must visit during the designated reception hours.
When visiting, it is customary not just to bow, but to consciously focus on the specific role of the deities you are praying to. For example, you might choose an amulet that aligns with your personal wishes, such as matchmaking, business prosperity, or longevity, to create a tangible connection with the divine. A slow stroll through the grounds to appreciate the historic architecture and natural beauty is a wonderful way to center your mind and find peace.
Located in the heart of Matsumoto, the shrine is surrounded by many historical attractions. It is within walking distance of the famous Matsumoto Castle, allowing you to combine a spiritual visit with a historical walking tour. The area is also filled with local restaurants and shops, making it perfect for a post-prayer stroll through the city. The location is extremely convenient for travelers using public transport, being only about a 12-minute walk from Matsumoto Station.
While no special preparation is required, please dress appropriately for the season. If you wish to receive a Goshuin, it is important to arrive during the reception hours (approximately 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Please note that most transactions at the shrine, such as purchasing amulets or Goshuin, require cash. It is helpful to carry small change or 1,000 yen notes. Additionally, the annual festival (Reisai) takes place from October 1st to 3rd; if you intend to request a formal prayer (Gokito), it is recommended to visit outside of these dates.
