Yoshino Park is a lush urban park that serves as a beloved relaxation spot for the people of Kagoshima. In 1989, it was selected as one of the "100 Selected Urban Parks" in Japan, a testament to its exceptional landscape beauty. Situated on a plateau approximately 234 meters above sea level, the park offers wide, unobstructed views that allow visitors to experience the dynamic and grand scenery unique to Kagoshima. With around 70,000 trees representing about 140 different species, the park's greatest charm lies in the ever-changing expressions of nature throughout the seasons.
The park was developed through an urban planning project spanning about eight years, starting in 1964, and officially opened on May 16, 1970. For decades, it has been a cornerstone of recreation and rest for Kagoshima citizens. It also played a significant role in regional greening culture, notably serving as the main venue for the 28th National Urban Greening Exhibition (Hanakagoshima 2011).
The park is dotted with several captivating spots. The most notable is the "Bay View Observatory," which offers a breathtaking panoramic view across Kinkowan Bay, encompassing the majestic Sakurajima, the Kirishima mountain range, and Mt. Kaimon. Near the fountain plaza, approximately 40,000 azalea bushes bloom in spring, creating a vibrant carpet of color. Additionally, visitors can explore the "Sotetsu (Cycad) Garden" for a tropical feel, the serene "Japanese Garden" to experience traditional aesthetics, and the charming "Sakura-en" area, all of which provide a deeply healing atmosphere.
Because the scenery changes with the seasons, there are many ways to enjoy the park. Spring (around March to April) is the most spectacular season, with cherry blossoms and azaleas in full bloom, making it a paradise for photography enthusiasts. In summer, the "Chibikko Pool" becomes a popular spot for families (please note that pool hours may change due to weather). Autumn and winter offer a more tranquil experience, with the clear air providing exceptionally sharp views of Sakurajima. We recommend visiting in the refreshing morning air or during the late afternoon to witness the beautiful colors of the sunset.
Yoshino Park offers various ways to connect with nature. You can relax on the vast lawns with family and friends or experience the elegance of Japanese tradition at the Japanese Garden. The "Sakura-en" facility, which includes a traditional Japanese-style room, provides a space for tea ceremonies and cultural experiences. For those traveling with children, the seasonal "Chibikko Pool" is a highly popular activity during the summer months. Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat or a fun family outing, the park allows you to escape the daily grind.
The area surrounding the park is characterized by the rich natural environment of Kagoshima City. Because the park is situated at a high elevation, the surrounding views are exceptionally beautiful. Access by car is convenient via Route 10. We recommend combining your visit with a meal at a nearby cafe or restaurant to enjoy the scenery while you dine.
