Yoro Falls is a spectacular waterfall in the Kiso River system, located in Yoro Town, Yoro District, Gifu Prefecture. With a drop of 32 meters and a width of 4 meters, it is a highly renowned spot selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and one of the Top 100 Water Sources. This site is not merely a scenic viewpoint but a place deeply connected to historical tales and legends. The surrounding area is well-maintained as Yoro Park, allowing visitors to experience both the richness of nature and a sense of historical tranquility, making it one of the representative tourist destinations in Gifu.
The waterfall is famous for the ancient 'Yoro Filial Piety Legend.' This story tells of a devoted son whose filial piety was so great that the water of the falls transformed into sake. Historically, it is recorded that when Empress Genmei visited this area, she praised the water as a 'beautiful spring' (Bisen) and subsequently changed the era name to 'Yoro.' This gives the very name of the location a profound historical significance. Additionally, 'Yoro Cider,' produced using the pure water from this region, has long been a beloved symbol of local culture.
The greatest attraction is the powerful sight of the water cascading vertically. The landscape created by the surrounding topography never fails to enchant visitors. The area around the falls is also part of the Tokai Natural Trail, making it a popular spot for hiking. The natural scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: in spring, the surrounding cherry blossoms frame the white waterfall beautifully, while in autumn, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves enhance the majestic view, offering a different face to the falls throughout the year.
The seasonal changes are incredibly rich. In spring, the blooming cherry blossoms create a stunning contrast with the white falling water. In autumn, the colorful foliage paints the mountainside, creating a masterpiece of nature. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the daytime when natural light is strongest, as it highlights the brilliance of the white water and is ideal for photography. If you plan to use the hiking trails, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended for safety.
Primary activities include strolling around the falls and hiking. The area is part of the Tokai Natural Trail, so the walk toward the waterfall itself is a wonderful way to enjoy nature. Above the falls, there is a trailhead for Mount Yoro, with paths crossing the Takidani area. Hikers often visit this area as part of a route to climb Mount Yoro or Mount Shogatake, enjoying the scenic views while trekking through the lush greenery.
The area is extensively developed as 'Yoro Park,' offering various natural paths and hiking trails. There is a parking lot located near the upper part of the falls, making access relatively easy. The surrounding area is dotted with spots where you can feel the local culture related to historical legends and the famous pure water.
To reach the waterfall from the parking lot, you must walk approximately 800 meters up a steep slope. Therefore, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing. If you intend to use the hiking trails, ensure you are prepared for the terrain.
