Yonako Grand Falls is an exceptionally beautiful waterfall located in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, and is officially recognized as one of the "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan." The site consists of two massive waterfalls: Fudo Falls, with a drop of 89 meters, and Gongen Falls, with a drop of 82 meters. This two-tiered structure of such immense scale is a rare and precious sight even within Japan. The landscape is a concentrated expression of nature's sculptural beauty, filled with the overwhelming energy of rushing water.
This area has been deeply connected to nature worship since ancient times. At the foot of the center of the falls stands the Okunoin Main Hall of Yonako Fudoson, where the waterfall itself is revered as the sacred body of the deity Fudo Myoo. The hall, rebuilt in the mid-Edo period, is a designated Tangible Cultural Property of Suzaka City. Historically, this site has been a sacred place for mountain asceticism (Shugendo), where ritual purifications in the waterfall were practiced. It also holds significant historical value through legends involving figures from the Sengoku period and as a site that preserves local spiritual culture.
The greatest highlight is the powerful two-tiered waterfall system. The roaring sound and mist from Fudo and Gongen Falls allow visitors to directly feel the raw strength of nature. Additionally, a park built on the former site of the Yonako Mine tailings offers a perfect vantage point to view both waterfalls simultaneously from the opposite bank. For a more tranquil experience, the recently renovated "Negodake Sanso" (reopened in 2023) allows visitors to spend a peaceful time in harmony with the surrounding nature.
