Yokohama Kanteibyo is a historic temple located in the heart of Yokohama Chinatown, dedicated to the legendary warrior deity, Guan Sheng Di Jun (Kuan Ti). Guan Sheng Di Jun is widely revered as a symbol of loyalty, bravery, and an unwavering spirit. The temple holds significant cultural importance, having developed alongside the history of Yokohama's opening to the world, as many Chinese immigrants arrived as merchants and craftsmen during that era.
The opening of Yokohama Port was a major turning point in the city's history. Following the opening of the port in 1859, many Chinese residents settled in the Yamashita-cho area, building their lives and communities. Within this historical context, the Kanteibyo has served as a vital spiritual center for the local community. The deity Guan Sheng Di Jun has been deified over generations and remains a central figure of worship and respect today.
The most striking feature of this temple is its traditional architectural style and the solemn atmosphere of its worship spaces. Inside the main hall, several deities are enshrined, with Guan Sheng Di Jun at the center. Visitors can experience a traditional way of praying by purchasing incense at the reception and following the prescribed rituals. The intricate architectural details and the sense of historical depth offer a unique visual and spiritual experience.
While the temple is generally open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, there are special operating hours during certain periods. For example, on New Year's Eve, it remains open until 3:00 AM, and on New Year's Day, it operates from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Additionally, during the period of the Lunar June 24th (Guan Di's Birthday), large-scale parades are held in Chinatown. Visiting during this time allows you to witness a much more vibrant and festive side of the local culture.
Visitors can engage in traditional worship practices. While care must be taken regarding fire within the main hall, you can purchase incense for 500 yen at the reception. After lighting the incense, follow the traditional etiquette: instead of blowing on it with your breath, use your hand to gently fan the flame out. You can experience the diverse forms of faith through the specific prayer procedures for various deities, including the Jade Emperor, Guan Sheng Di Jun, Dimu Niangniang, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Fude Seishin.
Located within the vibrant Yokohama Chinatown area, the temple is surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops. As you explore the surrounding streets, you can feel the historical presence of the temple amidst the lively atmosphere of the Yamashita-cho district.
