The Yokkaichi Industrial Night View (Shiohama) is a stunning scenery spot located in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, featuring a large-scale petrochemical complex. At night, the complex web of pipes, distillation towers, and massive storage tanks is illuminated by a variety of lights in white, yellow, and orange. This area is characterized by the way the light reflects off the sea and sky, allowing visitors to visually capture the functional beauty of industrial structures. The Shiohama area, in particular, offers many vantage points to view the plants up close, providing a sense of scale unique to industrial zones.
Yokkaichi has a long history as a developed industrial hub and continues to operate a massive petrochemical complex today. Since July 2010, the 'Yokkaichi Industrial District Night View Cruise' has been operating, allowing visitors to view the scenery from the sea. In recent years, there has been a growing community of 'Kojo-mei' (industrial landscape enthusiasts) who appreciate the aesthetic and cultural aspects of industrial facilities as a form of visual art.
The area offers several viewpoints with different expressions depending on your perspective. A representative spot is the close-up view of the distillation towers of Showa Yokkaichi Oil, where you can see the metallic details and intricate pipe networks up close. From mid-range spots like the Suzuka River North Embankment, you can capture a panoramic view of the entire plant complex. There are also hidden spots, such as near the substation, that offer specific angles for viewing. These locations are characterized by the striking contrast between the white steam rising into the night sky, red warning lights, and the brightly lit structures.
The best time to view the night scenery is after sunset. During the 'magic hour' at twilight, the sky turns a deep blue, creating a beautiful moment where the plant lights blend with the colors of the sky. While the view is available year-round, please be prepared for colder temperatures near the coast, especially in winter. Additionally, be mindful of traffic and surroundings during late-night hours on weekends.
There are two main ways to enjoy the view: from land or from the sea. By land, you can use a car or taxi to access spots like the Shiohama close-up area or the Suzuka River North Embankment to view the scenery from the roadside. For a more dynamic experience, you can join a dedicated cruise tour. The cruise allows you to view the entire plant complex from a three-dimensional perspective on the water.
