Yokeiji is a venerable Tendai Buddhist temple located in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture. Situated on a gentle hillside about 60 meters above sea level, it has long been revered as a 'Jo-ji' (upper temple). With a history spanning over 1,270 years, the temple is a treasure trove of cultural heritage, housing the principal deity Senju Kannon and numerous items designated as national, prefectural, or municipal cultural properties. The temple grounds feature a majestic landscape of historic structures, including the main hall, a three-story pagoda, a bell tower, and an octagonal hall.
The origins of the temple date back to 749 (the first year of Tenpyo Shoho), founded by the monk Boon Daishi. The name 'Yokei' is derived from the phrase in the I Ching, 'Yokei' (meaning 'excessive blessings'), which suggests that by accumulating good deeds, one will eventually receive happiness and blessings. Historically, a 'Ge-ji' (lower temple) known as the Yakushi-do was located at the foot of the mountain, but it was moved to the current higher location to protect it from war. Today, many of its structures, such as the main hall and the three-story pagoda, are protected as Important Cultural Properties.
The temple grounds are dotted with significant historical buildings. Visitors can explore the main hall housing the Senju Kannon, the three-story pagoda, the bell tower, the octagonal hall, and various halls dedicated to Yakushi, Jizo, Amida, and the Thirteen Buddhas. These structures are precious cultural assets preserved through centuries. Additionally, the annual 'Temple Treasure Exhibition' offers a rare opportunity to view sacred treasures and cultural artifacts that are usually kept hidden from the public.
The scenery changes beautifully with each season. In April, the 'Cherry Blossom Festival' is held, often featuring traditional Japanese Taiko drum performances by local high school students amidst the blooming sakura. In autumn, the temple hosts the 'Temple Treasure Exhibition' and 'Momiji (Maple) Cafe,' allowing visitors to enjoy the vibrant autumn foliage alongside historical-cultural experiences. During the New Year period (December 31 to January 3), various religious ceremonies such as purification rituals and Goma fire prayers are conducted.
Yokeiji offers opportunities to deepen your understanding of Buddhism through regular 'Buddhist Lectures.' These can include workshops on Goshuin (temple stamps) or creative sessions like making New Year's cards with Japanese painters. Seasonal events like the 'Momiji Cafe' in autumn and the 'Yokeiji Marche'—a local cultural market—provide wonderful chances to connect with the local community and the natural environment.
The temple is nestled in the rich natural environment of Setouchi City, surrounded by the peaceful scenery of a traditional Japanese mountain village. It is easily accessible via car: approximately 18 minutes from Okayama Station and 52 minutes from Okayama Airport, making it a perfect addition to a Setouchi sightseeing itinerary.
