Located in Motobu Town, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture, "Yohena Ajisai Garden" is a stunning destination where approximately 10,000 hydrangea plants are cultivated. What started as a humble collection of just two plants has expanded into a vast, beautiful landscape. It is a unique place where you can witness the resilience and beauty of hydrangeas thriving in a tropical environment.
The garden's history began with a single woman planting just two hydrangea shrubs. Over the years, it has grown exponentially to its current scale of 10,000 plants, becoming a deeply rooted part of the local community. The garden's significance is even recognized in academic circles; the study of its tropical hydrangeas has served as a subject for research and papers by the Vice President of the Japan Hydrangea Association.

The garden features a wide variety of hydrangea species, offering a diverse palette of colors. Visitors can observe the subtle changes in the flowers influenced by the season and weather. Additionally, the garden features the "Ajisai Garden Cafe," where you can enjoy seasonal menus. The cafe offers a variety of treats including ice cream, hot beverages, shaved ice (kakigori), zenzai (sweet red bean dessert), and even pizza pies, making your visit even more delightful.
The peak blooming season is primarily from April to July. Because the exact blooming status can fluctuate depending on the year's weather, it is highly recommended to check the latest information before your visit. The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (or 6:30 PM), allowing you to enjoy the vibrant colors during the bright daylight hours. The garden remains open even during rainy weather, though the visual experience may change.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the garden while observing the vast expanse of hydrangeas. The experience is complemented by the onsite cafe, which serves refreshments using local Okinawan ingredients and styles. Whether you are looking for a light snack or a refreshing drink, the cafe provides a perfect place to rest and soak in the atmosphere.
The garden is situated near the center of the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa. This area is a popular base for exploring northern Okinawa Island, and travel by car is the most common and convenient way to reach the site. It is located approximately 30 minutes (about 18 km) by car from the Kyoda Interchange on the Okinawa Expressway.
As the garden is set within a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Regarding parking, please note that it tends to be crowded on Saturdays and Sundays. To avoid congestion and respect local residents, consider using carpooling, tour buses, or visiting on weekdays. Dedicated parking is available for both passenger cars and buses. When dining at the cafe, please follow local guidelines regarding social distancing if applicable. Pets are welcome, but owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets to maintain the garden's beauty.
