Yodate Hattaki (よだてはったき) is a collection of eight distinct waterfalls located along the Yasokozawa River in the upper reaches of the Shirasagawa River, Nakajo Town, Gunma Prefecture. The sequence includes Ozen Falls, Datta Falls, Hako Falls, Kunai Falls, Fushigi Falls, Ido Falls, Satsuzen Falls, and Sen Falls located in Yodaogo. Each waterfall possesses a unique character shaped by the local topography and water flow. Surrounded by deep valleys and lush forests, this area is a breathtaking scenic spot filled with refreshing negative ions and natural energy.
The region is steeped in local folklore, including legends such as those of Kiso Yoshinaka. The settlements of the former Rokugo Village (now Nakajo Town) were historically scattered among deep valleys and mountains, preserving a sense of the traditional Japanese landscape. This area, which has a long history of coexistence with nature, is now recognized as a prominent hub for ecotourism.
The hiking course features a variety of striking landmarks. For instance, the Ozen Falls, encountered shortly after starting the trek, boasts a drop of approximately 20 meters and a massive plunge pool. The Sen Falls offers a view where you can look up from directly below, surrounded by a dense forest of ancient trees. The Satsuzen Falls is particularly unique for its water flow that appears to 'jump' mid-air. Additionally, the 'Byobu Iwa' (Folding Screen Rock) is a striking geological feature formed by magma intrusion. Other natural wonders, such as rock formations resembling 'Tengu's footprints,' add to the mystical atmosphere.
The best time to visit is from April to November, when the colors of nature are most vibrant. The season of fresh greenery in spring, the refreshing breezes of summer, and the brilliant autumn foliage are ideal for hiking. It is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate details of the waterfalls, the surrounding vegetation, and the unique rock formations.
The primary activity is waterfall hiking. Because the terrain is rugged and includes steep staircases, this is considered a serious trekking experience rather than a casual stroll. For a deeper understanding, you can participate in 'Eco-Tours' organized by local NPOs. These tours provide expert guides who explain the natural mechanisms, history, and culture of the area. Options include small-group private tours or guided-dispatch plans.
Yodate Hattaki is conveniently located between the famous Kusatsu Onsen and Shima Onsen. It is approximately a 30 to 40-minute drive from these hot spring resorts, making it a perfect destination to combine a nature experience with a hot spring getaway. Access is also available via Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station.
As the hiking course is rugged with steep stairs, sturdy hiking boots or trekking shoes are mandatory. We recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants, and bringing extra layers for warmth and rain gear. Please prepare water, lunch, a towel, a map, a compass, and a headlamp. If participating in an eco-tour, advanced reservations may be required. Please note that payment methods for tours should be confirmed in advance, as cash is often required for certain services.
