Yasuragi Tei is a waterfront embankment located in the lower reaches of the Shinano River in Chuo-ku, Niigata City. Development began in the 1980s, introducing a pioneering '50% slope' design that was exceptionally gentle for its time. This unique design results in a wide, sprawling area with a height of approximately 2m and a width of up to 15m, transforming the embankment from a mere flood control structure into a vast green space where citizens and visitors can harmonize with nature. You can enjoy an open, airy atmosphere while feeling the beautiful flow of the Shinano River right beside you.
The Niigata region has historically faced challenges due to its low-lying terrain, making it vulnerable to floods and tsunamis. Notably, the 1964 Niigata earthquake caused significant flooding near the mouth of the Shinano River. In response to these historical vulnerabilities, current embankment development has focused heavily on strengthening disaster prevention. The modern Yasuragi Tei was developed as part of a river improvement project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. While its primary purpose is robust flood control, the design integrates green belts and park-like spaces to promote coexistence between the urban environment and the natural world.
The most striking feature is its immense scale and gentle topography. The developed section stretches approximately 4.5 km from the vicinity of the Koya diversionary channel to Bandai Bridge, with greenery spreading across both banks. This vast area offers changing scenery throughout the seasons and frequently serves as a venue for large-scale community events. It is a perfect spot to relax while watching the gentle movement of the Shinano River. Even within the city, the seamless integration of the river and greenery makes it a quintessential symbol of Niigata's natural environment.
The landscape undergoes beautiful transformations depending on the season. In spring (early to late April), you can enjoy the seasonal cycle of blooming flowers, including cherry blossoms and tulips in early May. Daytime is ideal for a refreshing stroll in the gentle river breeze, while the evening offers a tranquil atmosphere with light reflecting off the water's surface. At night, the area takes on a unique character as the city lights blend with the reflections on the river.
Rather than structured activities, the primary 'activity' here is simply immersing yourself in nature. The wide-open spaces are perfect for walking, jogging, or resting on a bench. Due to its size, the area also hosts various local events and gatherings. It is a place where you can forget the daily grind and find true relaxation while gazing at the natural scenery.
Since Yasuragi Tei is located in the heart of Niigata City, it is surrounded by convenient sightseeing and shopping spots. It is easily accessible via bus from JR Niigata Station, making it simple to visit historical sites like Hakusan Park or various cultural facilities. With many hotels and restaurants nearby, it also serves as an excellent resting spot during a sightseeing tour.
As this is a vast outdoor green space, please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes suitable for outdoor strolls. While the area is a public space, you may need cash for nearby parking lots or vending machines. Please note that English signage and staff support are limited, so having a digital map ready is recommended. To preserve this beautiful environment, please follow local etiquette: take all your trash home with you and respect the natural surroundings. While the slopes are gentle, some sections may have uneven surfaces, so please proceed with care.
