Yashimagahara Wetlands is a high-altitude wetland located at an altitude of approximately 1,630m in the Kirigamine Plateau, Nagano Prefecture. It is officially designated as a National Natural Monument due to its unique and preserved ecosystem. The area offers sweeping views of the Kirigamine Highlands, where visitors can witness the changing beauty of seasonal flora and fauna.
This region is a strictly protected area dedicated to preserving the natural environment. The high-altitude wetland ecosystem has been maintained over many years, serving as a vital habitat for rare plants and animals. Facilities such as the Yashima Visitor Center (Asami Hall) play an important role in educating visitors about the local ecology and the importance of conservation.
The wetland features well-maintained wooden boardwalks, allowing visitors to explore the terrain safely without damaging the delicate ecosystem. The primary attraction is the seasonal transformation of the landscape: the vibrant Rengetsutsuji (Azalea) blooms around June, followed by the Nikko Kisuge (Lily) in July. The area also serves as a starting point for various routes leading to surrounding peaks like Mount Kuruma and Mount Kirigadake.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. The main visiting period is from late April to early November. The peak beauty occurs from June to July during the blooming seasons of the Azalea and Nikko Kisuge. Please note that during summer, sudden thunderstorms are common, and the area is prone to heavy fog, which can rapidly change visibility. It is highly recommended to check the weather forecast before your visit.
The wetlands serve as a base for various outdoor activities. You can enjoy a relaxing stroll around the wetland via the boardwalk (approx. 90 minutes) or take a more challenging trek toward Mount Kuruma (approx. 150–180 minutes). While the boardwalks are well-maintained, please be cautious and wear sturdy shoes, as paths can become slippery after rain. The area is perfect for birdwatching, photography, and deep immersion in mountain scenery.
Nearby facilities include the Yashima Visitor Center and the Kuruma Visitor Center. Along the Venus Line, you will find various roadside stations, drive-ins, and local farm shops. Other nearby points of interest include Izumi Lake and the Hoshigatata Ruins, making it a great area for a full day of exploration.
