The Yanai City Furuichi Kanaya Preservation District is a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings located in Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. This area was once a vital hub for trade in the Seto Inland Sea, and today, traditional structures are meticulously preserved across a 1.7-hectare area. The most striking feature is the beautiful scenery of white-walled storehouses (kura-zukuri) and traditional heavy tile roofs. The architecture vividly reflects the styles of the mid-Edo to early-Meiji periods, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a prosperous historical merchant town.
Historically, this region flourished due to its strategic position along the Yanai River, serving as a key point for transporting goods and trading within the Seto Inland Sea. The Yanai Port area, located north of the river, played a central role in regional commerce. Most of the preserved buildings follow the architectural styles of the mid-Edo to early-Meiji eras. The heavy, two-story structures with traditional tiled roofs and white plaster walls stand as a testament to the prosperity of the merchant class during that time. Even today, many of these buildings are maintained by local families who continue to uphold this historical legacy.
The greatest charm of this district is the Honmachi-dori street, which runs east to west, flanked by traditional merchant houses. The continuous line of white-walled buildings creates a highly aesthetic and sophisticated landscape. The heavy construction, featuring deep shadows on the white plaster walls, showcases the essence of traditional Japanese beauty.
