Yamate Hachibankan is a historic Western-style mansion located in the Kitano area of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, preserving the architectural styles of the late Meiji to Taisho eras. Also known as the former Sansen Residence, its most striking feature is its unique exterior, consisting of three connected Tudor-style tower structures. The interior offers a sophisticated art space where Western sculptures, prints, and Eastern Buddhist art converge to create a truly unique atmosphere.
Originally built during the Taisho era as the private residence of Mr. Sansen, the building is architecturally distinguished by its trapezoidal windows that project toward the sea and its visible structural elements like beams and braces. Having served as a grand private estate, the mansion now functions as a cultural facility exhibiting a blend of Western and Eastern art, serving as a cornerstone of the historic Kitano Ijinkan (Foreigner's Residences) district.
The museum houses works by world-renowned masters and diverse cultural artifacts. A particular highlight is the 'Saturn's Chair,' named after the Roman god, which is famously said to grant wishes to those who visit. Visitors can also admire the beautiful stained glass following the arched entrance, the Gandhara-era Buddha statues, Thai Buddhist sculptures, and East African wood carvings displayed on the second floor. The collection also includes Western prints, offering a wide-ranging journey through different eras of sculptural and graphic beauty.
To fully appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and the vibrant colors of the stained glass, we recommend visiting during bright daylight hours. Please note that closing times may vary by season; during the winter months, the museum tends to close earlier.
